Options on outdoor carpet
Q: We have that old low cut turf looking carpet (not sure the exact name) on our front porch/front steps outside. It’s worn out and needs replaced, what would you recommend and are there other options here for this?
A: The carpet to which you refer is called by many names, but most commonly indoor/outdoor or marine carpet, depending on where it is used. It is designed for outdoor applications where you want something other than wood or concrete flooring. When used in boating or on seaside decks, it is most often called marine carpet, while when it is used on steps as you have, or in sunrooms, it would most commonly be called indoor/outdoor carpet. Most people use this carpet in high traffic places where it adds traction, which is helpful for steps that become slippery when wet. Others prefer the color it adds to a space or find it useful in play areas and porches where spills are more likely, making clean up a breeze. It sounds like you have the four-season grass style of carpet, which has been popular and widely used for decades. If you want a new look, there are many other indoor/outdoor carpet options. First, today’s options include different styles, just like in indoor carpet. You could opt for a shag style (also referred to as grass, regardless of the color), needle punch, or loop. You also do not have to opt for green. The carpets come in a wide array of colors and patterns now, from natural hues like brown and blue, to bold and red. While the indoor/outdoor variety is somewhat different in texture, the new processes used to create it make them very comfortable to walk and play on, even barefooted. In fact, many of the choices could rival their indoor only counterparts quite well in both style and comfort. If you were looking to replace the existing turf carpet with more outdoor carpet, I would look around and find the color and style that suits you most and most suited to the design and color of the home. With so many options, you are sure to find something you love.
