Benefits of self-defense classes
Q: I am considering enrolling our family in a self-defense class. In addition to the benefit of learning techniques that could protect us in dangerous situations, would there be other advantages?
A: First, I want to commend you on taking proactive steps toward personal safety. It is always easy to assume that we will never run into a situation where we would need to defend ourselves. I hope that you or any of your family members never need to use the skills out of necessity but am confident that the knowledge you will gain can only be beneficial.
Learning self-defensive techniques is first and most importantly, a personal safety advantage. Such classes not only teach you technique, but also train your mind and body to know what to do in an attack so it becomes instinctual. That is a huge advantage when caught by surprise.
Self-defense can also teach you confidence in your ability to fight off an attacker. Just knowing that you have trained keeps your mind focused on the techniques, rather than on being afraid.
Most attackers never expect their victims to be trained, prepared, or able to overcome the element of surprise. Self-defense classes let you turn the tables and use those critical first moments to your advantage.
In addition to the self-protection advantage, there are many other physical advantages. Self-defense is a physical process involving practicing hits, kicks, and punches, all of which is great for working the core muscles and improving your cardiovascular fitness, especially if you make practicing your moves part of a regular workout. This can help improve your balance, and increase your flexibility and mobility, improve your stamina and aid in weight loss.
My suggestion is not to think of the class as a one-time deal to learn a few techniques, but an ongoing part of your overall physical fitness plan. Since the idea is to make these techniques instinctual, what could be better than making them part of your regular routine?
