Dull and dry looking boat?
Q: I am a first time boat owner having just purchased a Monterey 298 SS. It had been stored a couple of years and kind of neglected. It is not in bad shape, just sort of dull and dry looking inside and out. Can a detailing bring her up to speed or would I need something more?
A: A good detailing probably can bring back a lot of life and shine to your boat by removing oxidation, restoring shine and suppleness to the interior. I would suggest that you get one before taking her out on the water as a detailing is about much more than making the boat look great. Boating is a wonderful recreational sport, but it can be a costly one. You will want to protect that investment by keeping your boat in good condition and protected with regular service. Your boat is exposed to a lot of harsh elements such as sun, wind, dirt, moss, and debris. All of these things cause costly and unsightly damage. Some of the common damage includes fiberglass that has dried out and looks dull and hazy, overly dry vinyl seats, damage caused by improperly trying to remove the waterline or damage caused by using harsh chemicals in the cleaning of the craft. Washing and shining includes the process of using a non-abrasive washing soap and wax to remove not only the dirt but also the salt your vehicle has acquired. Using a non-abrasive product will prevent the stripping off of your boat’s wax coat or gel coat. Coats like this protect your boat’s paint and should always be kept intact. The next step involved in boat detailing is oxidation removal and waxing. A liquid oxidation remover removes and washes off oxidation so that your paint’s brightness and shine will be brought to life again. A reputable detailer will use professional grade marine wax after using the oxidation remover. This ensures a long lasting shine. Next, is metal cleaning and restoration. Water is of course very hard on metals, so keeping the metal components in top shape is extremely important. Professional detailers give the metal the attention it needs, from bow rails to cleats and T-top stands. Protecting the metal of your boat gives the boat that special look that really draws attention. Of course, everything on the inside of the boat deserves the same level of attention. Leather and vinyl seats get cleaned and conditioned, carpets cleaned, and windows cleaned to a spotless shine. There are many other components in a good boat detail, but these cover the basics. Now get on the water and have some fun!
