Big plans for surgical center
Q- What is the latest construction project on the horizon for Via Christi Hospital.
A- Via Christi Hospital plans to build an $18 million Surgical Center, the largest project of its kind since the hospital was built in 1971. The expansion will be on the southeast side of the hospital and will be close to 40,000 square feet. The Surgical Center will be adjacent to the hospital and connected to the main building as well. The Surgical Center will not only have its own parking and entrance on the east side of the building, but it will also be connected to the existing hospital for the comfort and care of our patients and their families. The new family waiting area also puts families closer to physicians, nurses and patients during a surgery.
Q- What is the timetable for the project?
A- Groundbreaking is expected in late June to early July with an 18 to 24-month timetable for completion. The new center will feature twice the amount of procedure rooms the current surgery area contains. When completed, our Surgical Center will have a total of eight (8) rooms where procedures can be performed. The floor plan contains five operating rooms, two endoscopy rooms and one minor procedure room.
Q- Why is this Surgery Center project important for the community?
A- It is hoped that the new surgery center will attract an additional 20 surgeons, physicians and other specialists to the hospital over the next three years. “We talk about this being a great place to receive care, but this is also a great place to practice medicine,” said Via Christi Pittsburg CFO Deb Bainbridge. “We know investing in state of the art technology is going to help us bring those physicians here to serve the patients of our region.”
