Healthy state of mind
Q-I am taking the steps this year for a healthy body, but what about a healthy mind to go with it?
A-At the start of the year most people focus on exercise and nutrition. While I believe these are important, good health is so much more. Healthy people don a state of mind that finds peace amid the storms of life, embraces the moments spent with people that they love, and finds rest in their spirituality. Vibrant people live life knowing that life’s short, so embracing every minute of it becomes top priority. Stopping all your busyness to embrace family and friends, share others’ struggles, and spend time in quiet are three keys to living a healthy life. First, the length of your life is unknown so embrace every opportunity to love on your family and friends and create life-long memories. Busyness with work or activities and focusing on what seems urgent rather than what’s important subtracts from the seconds you’ve been given, seconds you never get back. You can spend all your time working, cleaning your house, or running here and there. Or, you can invest your time with the people that matter most. 20 years from now nobody will remember what you did at work, but the people you spent time with creating memories will remember it all. Work nurtures your pocketbook; time with people nurtures your soul. This second one may seem odd to some. Here’s what I know; overcoming your own struggles, gives you the opportunity to help others similarly struggling. Adversity is the means by which you grow and become stronger emotionally. You flourish when you help others, forgetting your own stuff for a moment and supporting someone else. By the same token sharing your struggles allows others to grow as well. Trying to manage on your own robs you of support and others a chance for growth. Personal mental health improves when the burden of carrying a load alone is relinquished. Shared experiences create strong mental health. Third, investing in quiet time is essential to a healthy mind and body. Taking time to think about what’s important to you spiritually, what you want your life to look like, and what you value helps you maintain focus in a crazy world. It gives you time to reflect on your goals and gauge whether you are on the right path or how you want to adjust your course. It’s peace amid the storm so to speak. Healthy people value this time and schedule it into their lives. Great health is more than proper exercise and good nutrition. Embracing the moments in life that matter by spending time with family and friends, helping others through adversity and allowing others the opportunity to grow as well, and taking time for stillness and reflection all create balanced health. Check yourself and make adjustments. Life is short, you don’t need to miss a minute of it.
