Do I need to wear sunglasses all of the time?
Question: My husband reminds me constantly to wear my sunglasses, even in gray weather. He tells me that UV rays are always present and can cause considerable eye damage. I hate wearing glasses and being nudged repeatedly. Is he right? Marianne
Answer: MarianneDear Marianne, Your husband is right and loving in wanting to protect you. Medical studies confirm that sun exposure is the cause of major eye damage. Dr. Bahram Sheely, a well-known optometrist in Los Angeles, suggests "that all his patients wear effective sunglasses daily. It is critical to shield your eyes from direct UVA and UVB radiation, which is present even on gray days." A good lens should also protect against glare and intense light of which the major component is Ultra Violet light. The medical literature documents that excessive exposure to (UV) rays from the sun are key risk factors that can cause Age related Macular Degeneration and Cataracts. "An investment in good sunglasses is an investment in your eyesight." Dark lenses that are not coated with UV-absorbing material may actually increase the risk of cataracts because the pupil widens to compensate for the dark lenses, thereby letting more harmful ultraviolet waves enter the eye.Our survey with eye care specialists identified Maui Jim and Revo as two brands offering innovative lens technology for ultimate eye protection from UVA/UVB rays and glare. The Maui Jim glasses claim to be 100% optically correct. We can confirm that they offer excellent, sharp vision and true colors in all light. They're specially treated Polarized Plus lenses block reflective glare, as well as glare from above, below and the sides. Their titanium frames are ultra-light and extremely comfortable.Revo scientists developed unique lens coatings for NASA, which were then incorporated in their sunglasses so they let the right amount of light as well as the right kind of light enter your eyes. Consequently, you can see clearly from dusk to dawn and enjoy optimal protection for your eyes. Our tests in different lights confirmed the visual acuity.  Both brands feature polarized lenses and many fashionable styles.  Both are top-of-the line glasses and rather pricey. However, good eyesight is priceless.  Since these are specially treated lenses they may be reimbursable under some medical plans.
