How can I bring new life to my old furniture?
Q-I have a number of pieces of furniture that have come second-hand from yard sales and thrift stores. I bought the items because they had good bones and I really do like them. The problem is that my house is starting to look like a yard sale. Do you have any advice on how to spruce up my pieces and give them a more cohesive look?
A-I love thrift store, yard sale and flea market finds myself, so I understand your attraction to them. I also understand what you mean when you say your home is starting to look like a yard sale! A piece can be pretty and have a ton of potential, but it does not necessarily mean it will give your home the overall look that you want. The good news is that you can keep the pieces that you love and have that cohesive, planned design that you want. One option is to paint all of the pieces to match the décor of the rooms. Painted and refurbished items are all the rage right now and have gained in popularity due to the affordability as well as the eco-friendly aspect of giving a second life to an item that might have been tossed otherwise. I know painting your furniture sounds like a lot of work, and it might be. If you are not the do-it-yourself type or start the project and cannot seem to find time to actually finish it, consider having it painted for you. There are qualified services available where you can take your furniture and have it painted to your specifications, quickly and affordably. Not only would you have your furniture done right, you would be keeping the business local, which benefits the entire community. Good luck and happy painting!
