I'm 57... and needing help
:  How soon can a 57-year-old man expect to reach a complete level of fitness if he has not exercised for several years?
ANSWER:  Before beginning any exercise program you need to have a physical done by your physician, particularly if you are over the age of 40 and it has been several years since you have exercised.Once you have been checked by your physician you need to schedule a fitness assessment, preferably with the fitness specialist that will be working with you, to determine your fitness level before you get started.  The fitness assessment should consist of five components; Cardiovascular Muscle strengthMuscle enduranceFlexibilityBody CompositionAfter you have been evaluated by your physician and have been assessed by your fitness specialist you can determine some realistic goals (short and long term) that you will be able to achieve.  Then, after you have completed the first 3 steps, you and/or your fitness specialist will be better able to work up a fitness plan that will address your needs and enable you to reach your goals.  Motivation will be a key factor in achieving your goals and sticking to your workout.  Some people are self-motivated and others need help.  If you find that you are having a hard time keeping motivated, you may want to consider a personal trainer to work with you.  Re-assessing yourself is very important.  Every 8-12 weeks you should schedule a fitness assessment to see if your progression is on track with your goals and how well your program is progressing your fitness level.  As your fitness level improves your goals may change and your workout will need to become more challenging. How long will it take you to reach a complete level of fitness?  It will be determined by your health, beginning level of fitness, goals and motivation.
