Retired with nothing to do
: I have just retired. My wife has been a homemaker all her life. I'm about to go nuts and I think I've already driven her there. It's only been 4 months. A fella' can only watch so much TV and go to the grocery store so often. What's the best way to get in the 'retired' frame of mind?
ANSWER: Learn to enjoy your new found freedom. Many seniors regard time as the enemy; look at it as an asset. You're free to come and go as you please. Take control and find things that you enjoy. - Make new friends. Visit a senior center. Join a card group. Go to church. Ask others out for lunch or dinner. Make yourself available by positioning yourself among people. - Go to museums, theaters, and ball games - Jog or walk your dog. Offer to walk a neighbor or friend's dog - Go to a playground or park, feed the ducks - Attend reunions - Go to auctions - Spend time at the library reading or volunteering - Shop, especially bookstores or music shops - Join an exercise group - Get involved. There are many volunteer opportunities to help those less fortunate. Take a class. Many universities will allow you to attend at a discounted rate. - Maintain your self-respect. Maybe now is the time to lose a few pounds. Make the most of the good times. Feel good about yourself. - Take care of your health. Learn about the positive effects of proper diet and exercise. Find a fun gym or other facility to work off some energy. Swim, bowl or play golf. - Get a job. Even though you've finished your career, take this opportunity to try something new on a part-time basis. - Travel. Or, visit a town or attraction near your home. Some of the best trips are the short ones. - Get involved in politics. You'll find a plethora of interesting people at the local, state and federal level. - Use your imagination. Do the things that you never dreamed you'd do when you were working. Go to the places that you've only read about. Go, do, learn, and enjoy. You're a free agent.
