Refinishing cabinets
: We are wanting a new look in our kitchen, but we like our cabinets. We are wondering about refinishing them. Can this be done? Is it more affordable than changing them out? What are some of the options?
ANSWER: The cabinets can be refinished, but, if you have any other kind of doors except flat plywood doors, it will be very labor intensive and very expensive unless you want to invest some sweat equity and strip and sand the cabinets yourself. One alternative is refacing. New doors and drawers are installed to your specifications and the remaining cabinet surfaces are "faced" with the appropriate wood that you have chosen. (ex. walnut, cherry, oak, etc.) That wood along with the new doors and drawers are finished to your new finish requirements. You have a new kitchen and new color for a cost that's less then new cabinets. Also there would be new hardware to accent that new kitchen.
