Oral chelation therapy
: I’ve heard some things about ‘Oral Chelation,’ but I’m still not certain what it is. Can you tell me more?
ANSWER: Chelation (pronounced key-LAY-shun) comes from the Greek word ‘chele’ meaning "to claw" or "bind." Chelation therapy is used to rid the body of unnecessary and toxic metals. The Untied States Navy started using ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) in the mid-1940's to safely and successfully treat heavy metal poisoning. The doctors soon discovered that chelation did more than just remove heavy metals. Today, chelation is used to reverse the process of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), which is accomplished in part through the removal of the calcium content of plaque from the artery walls. By restoring good circulation to all tissues of the body, chelation therapy can help to avoid bypass surgery, reverse gangrene, alleviate intermittent claudation (cramps) of the legs, and restore memory. When the cardiovascular benefits of EDTA intravenous chelation were discovered, the therapy was met with enthusiasm, and for a time, even conventional physicians embraced it. However, as the promotion of new drugs and surgical procedures for the treatment of heart disease gained popularity, chelation fell out of favor and there it has remained, even though chelation therapy offers a viable alternative to surgery. In 1988, a study of 2,870 cases by the Department of Applied Science, School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University, documented that EDTA chelation therapy brought about significant improvement in 93.9 percent of patients suffering from coronary artery blockage. Elmer Cranton, M.D., estimates chelation therapy can help avoid bypass surgery in 85 percent of cases. He points out that during all the time that chelation therapy has been administered according to established protocol, not one serious side effect has been reported. The use of Oral Chelation (tablets) is a firmly established alternative practice. EDTA itself, when taken orally, provides most of the chelation effects in the body only less dramatically and slower than when received by intravenous chelation; however, oral chelation has several major advantages, including convenience, potential long-term continuous health maintenance, and lower cost. An oral chelation program can do more for your overall longevity than you can do even with the most prudent lifestyle possible because of the continuous nutritional protection chelation offers against a stressful and polluted world. People who use oral chelation have consistently observed a reduction of serum cholesterol, which may decrease the likelihood of atherosclerosis. For those who want to safeguard themselves against free radicals and plaque buildup, oral chelation can be used as an effective, noninvasive, inexpensive choice. Robert Haskell, M.D. wrote, "Of all the regimens you can use to help combat degenerative disease and restore health, chelation therapy is the most powerful. It produces the greatest number of benefits to the body - far beyond those of improved blood flow. If you want to get your prescribed nutrition to those parts of the body in which they must work…chelation therapy is the way to do it.”
