Can you camouflage ceramic tile?
: I'm remodeling my bathroom to blend with the earth tones in the rest of the house. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about the existing avocado green tub and matching ceramic tile. I'm sure that replacement costs will be more than my budget allows for. How can I best camouflage this dated color?
ANSWER: Imagine the possibilities of choosing a new color for your tub and tile. The task of camouflaging would be eliminated, which would allow you to run with any color scheme you want. Consider resurfacing your existing tub and tile. This finish will give your bathroom a new look without the mess, inconvenience, and cost of replacement.   Most people don't resurface because of a structural problem. They resurface for cosmetic reasons. There are a lot of pink, yellow, peach and avocado green bathrooms that are unsightly simply because of an outdated color scheme. Because your color choices are unlimited, so are your design options. And don't worry about any chipped, cracked, broken or missing tiles, those can be replaced or repaired prior to resurfacing.    Resurfacing is a system, which is a very durable, high tech coating, applied over the existing surfaces without any tear out or replacement to give a new look. Some surfaces that can be resurfaced are ceramic tile, Formica, cultured marble, fiberglass, bathtubs, sinks and cabinets. Additionally, after resurfacing, the grout will be sealed by the new coating, so it will no longer hold dirt, grow mold, or discolor. When resurfacing, the coating will take the shape and texture of the tile and grout creating the look and feel of newly installed tile.   Your cost savings could be substantial. Depending on the extent of the work the average resurfacing job should save you up to 75% of the cost of remodeling. Take a bathtub for example. Call any construction or plumbing company and ask them how much it will cost to replace a bathtub, prices will range from $1700 to $3000 (or more depending on the type of bathtub), also keep in mind that while the bathtub is being replaced there is a good chance that something else will have to come with it, adding to the cost. Assume that you want to replace the tile around the bathtub as well. Your price range will go from $2500 to $3500 (or more depending on the type of bathtub orcost of the tile). With resurfacing, that bathtub will cost less than $300 and if you added the tile the entire cost could be well under $500.   Any improvements to kitchens or bathrooms will return a reasonably higher value to your home giving you a very good return on your investment.
