My child and proper nutrition?
: Children are so busy these days. How do we as parents make sure they are getting the proper nutrition?
ANSWER: A well balanced diet is a cornerstone to good health for children and adults alike. Multivitamins and nutritional supplements can come in handy when you want to make up for dietary failings, as long as you follow the package directions and make sure you give the child the dosage appropriate for his or her age.  A daily multivitamin will not harm your child, and can provide some peace of mind that your child is getting enough nutrients, even on days when he or she will only eat a eanut-butter and jelly sandwich.Appropriate doses of vitamins can enhance your child's health.  A study in the British medical journal, The Lancet, showed that regular use of multi vitamin-mineral supplements could increase the nonverbal intelligence of children.  The study also discovered that a deficiency in any of the key essential nutrients could result in impaired brain and nervous function.   Use only quality natural (not synthetic) supplements from a reputable source.  Lower priced supplements can mean lower quality, with higher levels of fillers and other undesirable ingredients.  Give your children the best. They deserve it.Food is your best medicine.  Try and follow the guidelines of the five food groups in the USDA Food Pyramid, including grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy and protein.  If possible buy organic.Avoid foods that are heavily processed, including luncheon meats that contain nitrates.  Avoid sodas high in sugar, also chips and snacks that are made with non-hydrogenated oils.  Read labels; look for additives and artificial colors.  They can trigger allergies and intensify problems such as ADD and ADHD.Children who are raised on organic foods are healthier.  Starting a child out young on good foods stays with them their whole life.  They don't crave the sugar and junk foods.  Healthy foods taste better to them.  Even older children can learn to eat healthy.
