What is workers compensation?
ANSWER: Workers' Compensation is a state insurance program paid for by the employer.  Individual states regulate Workers' Compensation.  The purpose of Workers' Compensation is to protect workers in case of a work-related injury or disease that comes from, or in the course of, employment. The states determine the coverage, eligibility, types of benefits, and the financing of the benefits.  Employers are responsible for all costs of work-related injuries or diseases regardless of who is blame - employer or employee. The categories of Workers' Compensation benefits:• Permanent and temporary total disability income;• Permanent and temporary partial disability income;• Survivor's benefits in cases of fatal injuries;• Medical care expenses; and• Rehabilitation. The employee's earnings at the time of injury and the nature of the impairment are the basis for disability income payments.Workers' Compensation covers health problems identified as work-related.  Injuries or health problems resulting from activities away from the workplace are not covered by Workers' Compensation. All business owners know Workers' Compensation is a large cost of business.  Some may not appreciate this as an area where costs can be minimized.  Costs can be managed by employing occupational clinics, instituting prevention programs and training employees in safe work practices.
