Difference between independent, assisted and nursing home living?
ANSWER: Independent Living in a retirement community is when you are able to cook, clean, ambulating with or without assistance of any device, independently. You or your loved ones are responsible for your own medical management, financial management and overall care in daily living. You can choose to join in a meal or activity with others at the assisted living facility or cook for yourself.  Assisted Living is allowing a person to live within a senior facility and receive as much care or little care as they choose.  For instance they can cook for themselves or eat in a group dining room. Meals may be delivered if the resident becomes ill or in the case of inclement weather. Residents have the freedom to do their own laundry or have it done for them. The same options are offered with medications. If a resident is unable to monitor their daily medications, assistance is offered. Activities such as shopping, billiards, musical entertainment and outings are offered. Some folks still drive and enjoy getting out for their leisure. In the event that emergency medical treatment is needed, staff will contact the resident's M.D. and/or family as well as providing needed transportation. Most assisted living facilities will not allow residents to stay if their needs can not be met. In other words, if your loved one tends to wander and their safety is at risk, they usually don't qualify for assisted living. Some assisted living facilities offer a special care unit that provides assistance in a safe indoor and outdoor facility. Staff stays in this area and provides toileting, dressing, feeding, and assistance with ambulation. Nursing Home living is for the people that require more care than can be given in an Independent or Assisted environment.  Also, if the Nursing Home is Medicare certified, they can receive skilled care and Medicare can be billed for that service. Nursing Homes usually have rooms rather than apartments.
