How do I eat out and stay healthy?
ANSWER: In our fast paced lifestyle dining out has become a norm for many families. Although one does not necessarily need to choose from the light menu, many times these are among the healthiest choices on the menu. There are several ways to eat healthy when dining out.  First, look for menu buzzwords that signal lower fat choices like steamed, grilled, broiled, roasted, stir-fried, poached, marinara, teriyaki, or salsa. Higher fat foods are breaded, fried, creamed, au gratin, scalloped, hollandaise, Mornay, gravy, battered, sautéed, white sauce, Alfredo, creamy, Parmigiana and Pesto.   Second, most restaurants will prepare foods more healthfully if you ask. For example, ask for steamed veggies instead of fries, or ask that your meat be grilled instead of sautéed. Ask for sauces or dressings on the side, and request that visible fat be removed before preparation. Don't be afraid to ask for what you need. Finally, portion sizes are usually larger than a serving size so try one of these suggestions: Ask for smaller portions, split an entrée with a friend, or ask for a take home box at the beginning of the meal, divide the meal into portions when it is served, and take home the second serving for another meal.  Here are a few suggestions for better choices when choosing ethnic foods:  • Chinese -Chose wonton soup, Chinese greens, steamed beef with pea pods, steamed white or brown rice, steamed fish, steamed or vegetable based dishes.• Italian -pasta with marinara sauce, pasta primavera, minestrone soup, lean veal, chicken or fish, tomato-based marinara, marsala, and cacciatore sauces on pasta.• Mexican -Beans and rice, gazpacho, steamed tortillas, black bean/vegetable soup, plain tostadas and burritos, grilled meat and veggie dishes, tomatoes and chili sauces.Any eating plan for maintaining a healthy weight must be one that you can continue for the rest of your life. By simply taking a few moments to study the menu, making wise choices and watching portion sizes, you can make dining out fit into a healthy lifestyle.
