ANSWER: Would it help if I told you, you’re not alone?  Thousands of people start out just like you did, full of plans and ideas, only to have life get in the way and push our best laid plans aside. The major culprit is lack of focus.  When you maintain your focus, you maintain your path to your goal. There are several things that can help you maintain your focus.First, focus on your “why” you want to accomplish your goal. It’s important to remember why you want to do what you want to do. The definition of motive is “a reason to act.” You have to know why you are doing what you’re doing or wanting what you’re wanting.  The most powerful motivation is a one that looks at permanent, life-type benefits, not short-term incentive.  In other words, if you lose weight for a cruise or because you had a heart attack, you may not stay with the plan.  However, if you lose weight in order to be able to play with your children or grandchildren, or to stay out of a nursing home, you have a real long-term reason for doing what you’re doing. Do you work hard so you can just have material stuff, or do you work hard so you can have the experiences money can buy? If your purpose for hard work is quality time with your family creating memories, you’ll maintain your motivation when circumstances come up.Life’s short, you don’t want to miss a minute of it.  Maintaining your focus on your reason will allow you to continue on a straight track to your goal and enjoy every opportunity you have to create important experiences and memories.Second, you can keep focused on your goal by creating statements about your goals, stated in the present tense.  For example, if you want to lose weight so you’ll have more energy to play with your kids, your statement would read, “I have abounding energy and enjoy my children daily.”  If your goal is to get organized, your statement would say, “I organize my day so I get important things accomplished.”  Next, put your statements where you can read them every day.  In order to cement them in your brain, read them five times every day.  If you really want them to become part of your thinking, state them out loud, and write them down five times every day as well.  After about 30 days, the new thoughts become part of you.  You will see positive changes in your life and your motivation will remain strong when circumstances threaten to cloud your focus.Zig Ziglar was once confronted about being a "motivational speaker." The guy said to him, "You guys come and get people hyped up and then you leave and the motivation goes away. It doesn't last, and then you have to get motivated again." Zig reminded the gentleman that baths are the same way, but we think it is a good idea to take a bath every day!It is true that motivation doesn't last. We have to renew it each and every day. That's okay. It doesn't make motivation a bad thing. We simply have to realize that if we want to stay motivated over the long term, it is something we will have to apply ourselves to each and every day.We all come equipped with TONS of motivation; sometimes we just need someone to help us tap into it.  A friend, mentor, or a weight loss or life coach can help you maintain a laser focus on your goals and help you achieve them.No matter what your objective; losing weight, making more money, or achieving your goals, I would be glad to help.
