Is there hope for the “fat kid”?
ANSWER: First, let me start by telling you I completely understand where you are coming from. I grew up the “fat” kid. The other children around me did everything in their power to make sure I knew just how fat I was too. Many years of being called “fatty” and assorted other names left me knowing that I was fat, dumb and stupid, and that I would never be able to accomplish anything. I too, was on “diets” throughout my life.  Eventually I discovered the missing piece of the puzzle. It was the motivation that was missing. I certainly knew how to lose weight, but until I figured out what was getting in the way of my motivation, I always gained the weight back. I discovered that my lack of permanent motivation came from the negative beliefs that I continued to hang on to.    Negative beliefs are the results of past experiences, things that were said, or situations that occurred. These beliefs are in our unconscious.  For example, when something goes wrong, our automatic response is “I know what that means.  That means I’m too fat”, or “that means I’m doing something wrong”, or “that means, I’m not good enough.” It may not mean that at all.  However, we are so accustomed to thinking this way, that our immediate response assassinates our motivation. Earl Nightengale said, “The strangest secret is that we become what we think about.” What ever we chose to think about, is what will happen in our bodies and lives. So how do we change the negative beliefs we’ve clung to for so long?  The first step is to recognize what you’re saying to yourself. When you identify it, you bring it from subconscious to the conscious mind where you can begin to work on it.  Once you’ve identified the negative belief then you can start to change that belief. You begin to tell yourself something different. For example, instead of saying, “I’ve failed before, so I probably will again” you say “I know I am going to accomplish my goal because I have more information than I did before”. Instead of saying, “I’ve failed” you say, “That didn’t work very well, I will try a different approach this time.”  Reframing those negative beliefs into positive ones, transforms your mindset with time   Remember, your thoughts determine what will happen in your body. When you decide to believe differently, you move closer to your goals.Donna Kretch founder of Thin and Healthy’s Total Solution, suggests that the next step is to list  what would be different when that goal is achieved and see it.   List the benefits and the things that will be different. See with crystal clarity where you’re going to end up. Have such as strong vision so that you can taste it; you can feel the pride, excitement and energy having reached your goal. Remind yourself daily; put it at the front of your conscious mind daily. Finally, pour positive, motivational information into your mind.  When you B.Y.O.B (Bombard Your Own Brain) with positive things on an on-going basis, it becomes easier to stomp out those negative beliefs that threaten to undermine your goals. You wouldn’t take a bath to clean your body only once a week or even less often and call it good would you? By the same token you must give your mental self a “bath” daily as well to wash out the negative thoughts on a daily basis. We become what we think about. Donna Kretch says, our thought becomes our beliefs; our beliefs become our feelings; and our feelings become our behaviors, our words, and our actions. Once you realize what your negative beliefs are, you can begin to reframe them into positive statements.  You can then begin to see yourself where you want to be and pour positive affirmations into your brain on a daily basis to help you achieve your goal.
