Cold weather food
ANSWER: WOW, that’s something I haven’t thought about in years, but what a nice set of memories you’ve spawned. As I begin to reminisce, lots of memories come from the old downtown area, as that was where lots of folks spent lots of time.
Chili has always been a favorite in Wichita. Dallas Chili Parlor on East Douglas was one of Wichita’s best. It had the hot but not too hot seasoning. Another and one of the greats was Manning’s Chili. It was headquartered in the blond brick building across form East High. Phil Manning was the owner. He was also one of Wichita’s former mayors. Manning’s is still around the city in various places.
I cannot recall the little restaurant across from the bus depot in the 50’s but their chili was fantastic. I know many places served chiliburgers and unlike some places today, they knew just how much chili to spread on so you could eat it in your hand. Sometimes today you find yourself grabbing for a fork with your sandwich or it will spill on your plate and in your lap. Another great burger was at a place located at the corner of 13th and Washington. The Ralph Baum had a good one. There were many good chiliburgers across the town to warm a cold day.
Wasn’t the old Coney Island at the corner of Topeka and William? I thought it was the greatest Coney I ever tasted. It was especially good on cold days. Ted Christian operated it. The chilidogs were really good at Dog and Shake too, and they still are. Oh, and how could you ever beat a Nuway? They have always been and still are a Wichita favorite.
Cold weather may be here but memories of good food places can take away a lot of the chill. Bundle up…keep warm…and have a good winter.
