I.R.S. = “I R Scared”
Question: What happens when you reach in your mailbox and you see a return address that sends waves of nausea and fear into your body? That return address happens to be our lovely internal revenue service, The IRS. Answer: Ideally, you as an honest taxpayer want to only have slight contact with the IRS sometime around April 15 or before if you are one of the 15% who file early. You either grit your teeth and cough up what they say or you look forward to a small bonus for over paying your taxes (interest free) all year. What if you get a dreaded letter and it says they want the taxes you owe for the many jobs you held in California in the last three years and they want you to pay up NOW?? Your mind reels, WHAT JOBS???? You haven’t even seen Disneyland or the Golden Gate Bridge. Never been to California?? Your social security number has and it has been busy. Daily people who were not born here have social security cards and drivers licenses issues for about $35.00. “You” now get jobs, earn wages, get traffic tickets and do all sorts of things in states you personally have never been to. Now the new “YOU” does not plan to file taxes (why should they?). They don’t pay traffic fines (that would bring them in too close a contact with law enforcement). The new “YOU” just goes on doing what ever the day brings for them to do. Things may show up in 6 months or it may take 2-3 years for enough problems to show up for some sort of enforcement to take place. Suddenly one evening you are stopped in a routine check point and before you know it you are in handcuffs and being transported to jail in the back of a police cruiser with your mind spinning trying to understand what is going on. This isn’t the plot for a new TV show nor is it the latest mystery novel. It is YOUR LIFE circling the drain while you desperately try to grasp what is happening. This is the life of a victim of one of the 5 forms of Identity Theft. It isn’t a cute TV commercial and your credit card company isn’t interested in fixing this problem for you. Just think, while you sleep tonight your social security number and drivers license may be on a whirlwind trip around the United States, Over 2 million people rest easy knowing they have someone watching for these things 24 hours a day 7 days a week. When no one could find the money Saddam Hussein hid who do you think found it? “Kroll.” Pick up any magazine or newspaper and see how many articles you find for Identity Theft, watch Dateline NBC. Your personal information is available for $5.00.
