Keeping carpet clean in the summer
Answer: Open the windows on a warm, sunny day, move the furniture and get ready for spring carpet cleaning. Clean the dirt and odors that have accumulated over the winter from your carpets. Make it a do-it-yourself project by renting or buying a steam cleaning machine. For best results, keep the carpet in good shape by regular vacuuming and by following some spring carpet cleaning tips. Rent or Buy a Steam Cleaning Machine If you are cleaning your own carpets, consider renting a steam cleaner from a local hardware store. Steam cleaning machines can be attached by a hose to the sink. They heat the water to a high temperature, loosen the dirt and odors from the carpet fibers and suck the debris into the machine. Many steam cleaners use a cleaning solution that provides extra cleaning power. The cleaning solution is purchased separately from the machine rental. Purchase your own steamer machine if you clean your carpets frequently. Upright steamer machines are available for home use from department stores like Sears. Research steamers by reading Consumer Reports and on-line reviews to be sure you are getting a reliable steamer machine. Regular Carpet Maintenance Tips Keep on top of regular carpet cleaning maintenance by vacuuming frequently. Depending on how much foot traffic your carpet gets and how many pets you have, this could mean vacuuming as much as once a day or as infrequently as once a week. Regular vacuuming removes dust, dirt and pet hair. Spot clean as soon as a spill or a pet accident happens. Spilled liquids and pet accidents can not only stain, but leave odors in the carpet. Blot the spill as much as possible. Clean the area with soap and water. If the stain is something that will create an odor, like cat urine, consider using an enzyme cleaner designed specifically for cat urine odor removal. Spring Carpet Cleaning Tips Carpets can be steam cleaned once or twice a year. Spring carpet cleaning will remove all the soil that has accumulated over the winter months. Always test the steamer in a hidden area of carpeting to make sure it won’t damage or discolor the carpet fibers. Vacuum the carpet thoroughly before steam cleaning. Remove as much surface dirt as possible. Instead of buying a cleaning solution to use in the steam cleaner, consider using white vinegar. Continue to follow the directions on the machine. Simply replace the cleaning solution with vinegar. Mix the vinegar with water in the same ratio that you would mix the cleaning solution. Vinegar is an inexpensive and effective natural cleaner and is good at odor control. The vinegar odor dissipates once the carpet dries. Spring carpet cleaning can be a do-it-yourself project, especially if carpets are maintained by regular vacuuming and spot removal. To spring clean carpets, rent or buy a quality steam cleaning machine. Follow some basic carpet cleaning tips and enjoy fresh, clean carpets through the spring and summer months.
