Short and long term stays in skilled care
Answer: There are some instances when an individual needs skilled nursing care for a short term stay. This could be following a fall and broken hip, mild stroke, knee replacement, etc. These acute conditions usually require a brief hospitalization followed by rehabilitation to get the individual strong enough to return to their previous living arrangement. Other people have more long term needs possibly due to Alzheimer’s, extreme frailty, or major stroke. In this case, care is necessary on an ongoing basis. A person in need of a skilled nursing facility on a long term basis normally falls into one of the following categories: 1) An individual may not be able to care for themselves due to a physical, emotional or mental problem. 2) Some can no longer take care of their own Activities of Daily Living. This would be things like bathing, eating, dressing, toileting, or medication management. 3) An individual may need more care than can be provided by a care-giver at home. 4) Some individuals may have wandering tendencies to the point that they are no longer safe to be alone. 5) Some individuals may have extreme medical needs that makes it necessary to be under the care of a licensed RN 24 hours per day, such as tube feeding, IV treatments, dialysis management, tracheotomy care, etc. 6) Some individuals may need short term skilled care or nursing and therapy to regain prior level of functioning so they can return home. 7) Some individuals may have a drastic enough general decline that a physician will suggest an admission to a nursing facility.
