Each year it gets harder
Answer: Even though it is the New Year I often hear people say “that’s just the way it is”, “I can’t do anything about the situation I’m in.” They run a negative script in their head all the time. They’ve decided to accept these limiting beliefs as true and play the movie over and over again. If you hear your own voice in those statements, begin today tearing up the old script and starting a new one. Look at your life from the perspective of new and better possibilities and unlimited thinking, and then be empowered to “go for it”. This is the time you say, “What if I could do ANYTHING?! What if I had the to chance to start fresh and make everything work out just the way I want it to?!” It’s time to dream, set goals, and make plans to achieve. Children have no problem dreaming and thinking about what they want in the future. All too often, however, past disappointments or negative people stomp on those dreams. You must reclaim your right to dream. You not only have the right to dream but you have the ability to pursue and take action toward making your dreams reality. Discovering your dreams means taking time to listen; not to others but to yourself. Jim Rohn said “If we listen to others, we hear their plans and dreams (and many will try to put their plans and dreams on us).” Your goals and dreams are unique to you and come from who you were created to be and gifted to become. Listening involves taking quiet time. When you’re quiet you can listen to your heart. Think about what really thrills you, what things really get your blood moving. What would you love to do, either for fun or for a living? What would you love to accomplish? What would you try if you were guaranteed success? What would your body, your relationships, your life look like in 1 year, 5 years, 10 years? Release yourself from an “I can’t” attitude, to an “It’s possible” attitude. Write down all of your dreams as you have them. Don’t dismiss any dream as too outlandish or foolish – remember, you’re dreaming! Let your thoughts and pen fly as you take careful record. Now look at your list and prioritize those dreams. Which are most important? Which are most feasible? Which would you love doing the most? Put them in the order in which you will actually work on attaining them. Always move toward action. Small steps daily will get you where you want to be. Are you constantly moving, constantly busy? Ask yourself the question, “Busy doing what?” In other words, are the activities you are participating in moving you towards your goals? If not, then eliminate those things and replace some of that time with quiet and discover the actions that will propel you where you want to be. Plan the daily actions that move you in the direction of your goals. Life is too short to not pursue your dreams. Someday your life will near its end and reflect; will it be with joy or regret. Jim Rohn also said, “We all know that joys (or disciplines) weigh ounces, while regret weighs tons.” Dreaming, setting goals, and taking daily action afford you a life of joy and a sense of peace. Make the New Year the year you achieve more than ever.
