Painting popcorn ceilings
Answer: It sounds like it should work and it is somewhat of a solution in a small room such as a bath or closet; however, it isn’t that simple for larger rooms, such as a bedroom or living room. There are a number of reasons it is not recommended for larger rooms. The biggest reason is that the popcorn was used so the drywall underneath did not have to be finished and shimmed nearly so exact. Popcorn covered up a lot of "sins." All of these are exposed when the popcorn is removed. It can be very expensive to fix all of these "sins" and prepare the surface for even a "knock" finish, let alone a painted finish. A random texture is almost always preferred for the best looking and elegant finish, and the most economical.
