What is “faux” finish?
Answer: You probably see “faux” things in your own home every day and are completely unaware that they are “faux.” The word “faux” is French for the word “fake”, or imitation. It is pronounced “Fo,” with a long “o.” Generally “faux” means, when discussing design and finishes, something that looks like it is a real object such as a flower made of plastic to look like a real flower. Sometimes you can hardly tell the difference between a “faux” something and a real something. For instance, Naugahyde is imitation leather, yet sometimes it looks like the real thing. Walls can be painted and stained to look like castle walls, windows on to garden or a mountain view. You are only limited by your own imagination. All of the new “faux” finishes and products related to them have opened a whole new world of wall and ceiling finishes. Many of these can be easily done by you, the home owner. Many are so simple and easy to do that you will surprise yourself at what you can do even with no experience and just a few minutes of instruction. A little texture, a little paint, a little glaze…and “wa-la”…your own personal finish. It saves money and it is great for the environment.
