Parents guide to senior portraits
Answer: Well first, Congratulations and welcome to an exciting year, and it’s not too early to start thinking about Senior Photos. And parents……….. Please be aware that Senior Photos aren’t what you remember……the possibilities are endless. The right photographer will take the time to get to know your Senior and create unique images for you to cherish forever.
When? They can have their photos taken anytime during the summer prior to their Senior Year. The yearbook staff advisors will have a deadline for the head and shoulders photo. It’s best to have this done well in advance of that date, so the photographer has enough time to deliver the image to the yearbook staff. Every school is different, most have guidelines in terms of clothing, poses, etc. Contact the advisors for their schools rules and deadline dates.
How? Together with your Senior take some time to search local photographers websites and talk with friends about their experiences. Finally call some photographers you are interested in for a consultation appointment. In those consultation appointments, you will have the opportunity to speak in depth with the photographer about your ideas, show them clothing choices, let them know what your child’s interests are- whether it’s sports, drama, music, whatever defines WHO they are! The photographer will give you their thoughts and guidance and you will be able to view an extensive gallery of their work at their studio. It’s important to choose a photographer you are comfortable with, as you will be spending some time with them. You should allow anywhere from 2-4 hours for the session, depending on your needs. And finally …..Book your appointment with the photographer of your choice. Let the fun begin.
What? Seniors……….the clothes need to reflect your personality. Complete the outfits with hats, shoes, jewelry and jackets. Texture and layers are great. Avoid big horizontal stripes, and clothing that is too small, the problem is obvious in the photographs. Bring all the clothing hanging rather than folded or stuffed in the bottom of a bag. Wrinkles will show. Do you wear glasses? Contact your optometrist and get empty frames to eliminate glare if you can. Do NOT try out a new hairstyle or make up for your session. You might not recognize the person in the photographs. It’s very important to make sure you dress from head to toe. Think through each outfit to make sure you have shoes, the right color socks, belts, under garments, (very important girls) and jewelry. Don’t get sunburned or tan a lot before your session, if you have strap lines, they will show. Barefoot is always in style. Be prepared to let loose and have fun.
Where? A professional photographer will offer you both studio and on location options. Most photographers have special places in mind for amazing on location photos, but don’t hesitate to request your own location choice. This is just one more way to personalize your photos.
