Symptoms of loneliness
Answer: Many people think that you must be alone to feel lonely. Simply put, feeling lonely is an emotional state of mind that includes feeling as if you do not belong or do not have anyone with whom you can associate. Even in a social setting, it is possible to feel alone. Loneliness can manifest with both physical and emotional symptoms. While it is different than, and can be confused with depression, if overlooked, it can lead to depression and other serious health issues. Here are some of the most common symptoms of loneliness: • Homesickness • Shyness • Self-consciousness • Dissatisfaction with social or family relationships • Lethargy • Lack of direction • Sadness • Fatigue • Weight loss • Increased use of alcohol • Fixation on death • Memory problems Often, senior life includes regular major life changes such as the loss of a spouse or friends, moves and heath problems. Any of these can add to feelings of loneliness. If your family member is exhibiting any of these symptoms, it is important to get a full medical evaluation to see if any other conditions may be causing the problem. Sometimes, something as simple as a change in medication can make a huge difference. If the feelings of loneliness are circumstantial, it may be wise to help the senior ease in to new situations. For example, if they have recently moved into your home, or into another, spend extra time socializing with them in their new community. Being a catalyst to new experiences can help them get over the fear of having to “start over” or help them identify new activities that would interest them. Feelings of loneliness are normal and common, but should never be ignored.
