Considerations for visiting someone with Alzheimer’s?
Answer: I understand the heartache and frustration you must feel. One of the most difficult parts of Alzheimer’s is that it robs the patient’s ability to enjoy the company of their family in so many different ways. One of the first things you need to realize when you visit is that you will need to expect changes in your mom in many areas. In addition to lapses in memory, which alone can be profound, she may also have changes in personality. Commonly, people with Alzheimers have become very suspicious and view everyone as a threat. If you expect that there will be changes, you will not be as put off by them when dealing with her. Next, try to visit soon after breakfast. Studies show that patients with dementia become more confused and agitated later in the day. A morning or early afternoon visit may result in a more positive experience for you both. Finally, go with the flow. Since you cannot undo the damage the disease has caused, you can choose to join them in their journey and make the best of a difficult situation. Try not to frustrate her with questions about the past or take it personally if she thinks you are someone else that day. Simply announce yourself and your relationship upon entering her room. If she does not recall who you are, or where she is, it will be evident very quickly. You cannot force her into your reality, but you can take time to visit her in hers. It is hard to tell if things will calm down for your mom. Perhaps adjusting these things will help in some measure. Above all, remember that there will be good days, and bad days. As hard as it is to see the toll the disease takes, do not let it rob you and your mom of the pleasure that can still be had in frequent visits.
