Things to consider: series - part 3
A: One of the most important factors you need to consider in a kitchen remodel concerning your cabinet is the budget. Most “rules of thumb” for kitchens declare that you will spend half your money on cabinets, and if you like upgrades, plan to exceed that amount. To keep your budget in check, decide how much you can spend on cabinets, and determine to stay within that budget. Period. To do this, I suggest you make decisions based on a few things: •What is the price range of the homes in the neighborhood? Would pricey upgrades be recovered if you sold the home? • What are the least expensive configurations? • Is the style you like available in more than one price range? • What finishes are most expensive? • What features are most important to you? Many people become so excited about the project that they forget the bottom line- over all price. Remember that little things add up very quickly. Before you okay crown molding, a pricey faucet, or choose those great pull out options, consider the alternatives. If the handles and drawer pulls you love are over budget, consider another option and replace them later. The slide out features can nearly double the price of cabinets, but if you love them, you do not have to rule them out entirely. Consider this feature for where it is most needed, or adding them yourself later with kits available online and at home improvement stores. Finally, do what you can to minimize expenses and do what you can on your own. Demolition and removal of your old cabinets is an easy, and surprisingly fun, cost saving project.
