Installing wood floors
A: While every situation varies depending on numerous factors, you should typically plan for a one-three week lead time for scheduling installations of wood floors. Once you have your installation date, you’ll need to plan for the amount of time it takes for the installation process. Several things play a role in how long this takes such as: •Whether the floor is hand nailed or if a manual or pneumatic stapler is used •The width of the boards being used •The layout of the floor plan For a standard 400 square foot room, furniture moved, and ready to go; common 2 1/4” strip flooring will take 10-12 hours for an experienced installer. Once installed, the unfinished floor will be sanded, stained and a protective covering applied. Normally sanding and finishing is a three day process, but allow for extra time as drying time varies depending on the weather conditions and the type of surface coat being applied. A coat of oil base poly takes eight-12 hours to cure and a coat of water base poly takes four-six hours to dry. Lastly, of course, you’ll need to consider how long it takes to put your home back in order! The process is actually fast, but the several steps over the course of several days may, or may not dissuade you from planning installation during the holidays. However, it is very possible and with minimal planning, should not disturb any festivities.
