What’s up with the sandwich craze?
A: You are right to notice, there is a sandwich revival taking place on the culinary scene and it is HOT.
For years the sandwich was just sort of a convenient side note, fit for packed lunches but not necessarily the attention grabbing item on the menus of trendy restaurants. Not that there were not plenty of really mouthwatering sandwich recipes out there- there certainly were- they just did not seem to get the attention they deserved.
Now the sandwich has gone gourmet and is grabbing headlines everywhere. Partly due to the food truck revolution where venders, looking for easily transported foods, turned to the venerable sandwich. Rather than offering the same tired breads and meats, they took it up a notch and offered sandwiches that people were not likely to make themselves, using fresh ingredients and plenty of spices.
Suddenly the gourmet sandwich craze was on, and even the most unlikely corporations were on board. Even Disneyland brought in outside sandwich venders for a recent event for the first time in the park’s history.
While the food truck allure has died down, the desire for gourmet sandwiches has not. Now diners want the convenience of take away gourmet food with the dine in option. Whether at work or dining out with friends or family, diners can enjoy delicious, and far from average sandwiches.
