Preparing your vehicle’s exterior for winter
A: Winter in Southeast Kansas, as we all know too well, is very hard on your car with extreme temperature changes, rain, sleet, snow, sand, salt and other chemicals that are used on our roadways. You need to clean your car thoroughly, seal and protect it from all of those damaging elements to ensure it survives relatively unscathed. Protecting your car’s paint & clear coat finish for winter is critical! Follow these steps to ensure your car is protected for the winter months ahead: • Wash your car. You must always wash your car before waxing or polishing it (or you’ll be sealing in the dirt). It is important to use car wash soap before waxing to ensure that you don’t have any remaining dirt or soap residue after rinsing. • Wax your car. The vehicles wax coat is the last line of defense between the damaging winter elements and your paint / clear coat finish. • Seal the wax with a paint sealant. Paint sealant will stay above the wax layer and will be the first barrier that comes into contact with the salt, snow, ice, etc. • Keep your windows protected! Your visibility while driving in ice, snow and rain is critical. Polishing your vehicles windshield and windows will help detour some (not all) of these elements. You can’t drive if you can’t see! In our area, snow, ice and rain storms pop up quickly and frequently during the winter months. Taking the time to detail your exterior properly will ensure that your car is protected until spring. Next month, we’ll discuss those often neglected wheels and tires!
