Invest in what matters
A: Most people probably think I should be writing about exercise and nutrition since I own a gym, but health is so much more. Healthy people don a state of mind that finds peace amid the storms of life, embrace the moments spent with people that they love and find rest in their spirituality. In particular, a family in our town recently shared their journey through the illness and loss of their little one on a blog. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of people who didn’t know the family personally, followed as their story unfolded. The outpouring of love from people in the community as well as from their internet followers was absolutely amazing when their baby went to be with the angels. Many people were touched and strengthened because her parents were willing to share their story. I want to share three things we can learn whether you know the whole story or not: Life’s short; embrace every minute of it, sharing our struggles helps us heal and gives hope to others and that supporting each other is what community is all about. The length of your life is unknown. Embrace every opportunity to love on your family and friends and create life-long memories. Busyness with work or activities and focusing on what seems urgent rather than what’s important subtracts from the seconds you’ve been given, seconds you never get back. You can spend all your time working, cleaning your house or running here and there. Or, you can invest your time with the people that matter most. Choose well because life is short. Overcoming your own struggles, gives you the opportunity to help others similarly struggling. Adversity is the means by which you grow and become stronger emotionally. Shared struggles allow others to grow as well. Trying to manage on your own robs you of support and others a chance for growth. Personal mental health improves when the burden of carrying a load alone is relinquished, and others flourish when they forget their own stuff for a moment and support you. Either way the experience enables you and those that helped you, offer support to others when life gets tough. Strong, healthy communities rally together and support one another. Whether it’s the physical community you live in, an organization you’re part of, or even a community on-line, being part of a strong healthy community is essential. For example, in Valley Center recently exemplified this strength when money was raised for a fellow citizen who needed a kidney, when we donated coats, hats, and mittens to our school kids, and now when our own just need loving through their tears. What a beautiful thing when any kind of community combines to support one another. Great health is more than proper exercise and good nutrition. Healthy people embrace the moments in life that matter, grow through adversity and allow others the opportunity to grow as well, and band together in support of their communities. Such valuable lessons, all because one family was willing to share.
