Trimming and gardening
A: You asked a timely question because now is the time to trim some shrubs and trees and get your vegetable garden ready. The rule of thumb on trimming is: if it blooms in late summer or fall you can trim it now and it will not affect the blooms. You trim spring blooming shrubs and trees right after they get done blooming or you will not get blooms. Evergreen shrubs and trees except for pines (trim in July) you can trim now and again in summer if needed. How far can you trim back? Well, it depends on the plant. Most evergreens you do not want to trim down past the evergreen part. Most deciduous shrubs and trees do not need trimmed more than a 1/3 of the plant. Preparing your garden To get your garden ready for spring planting, you will want to start by tilling and getting the soil ready. One easy way to get the ground prepared is to put down two inches of compost (chewed up leaves work well) then another two inches of peat moss, and then two inches of topsoil. Mix really well and you have a very good start for your vegetable garden. Vegetables you can plant in March include lettuce, radishes, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, and potatoes.
