Best flower and plant choices this season
A: You have many choices, but there are a few choices that will give you color longer as they last longer in the season.
Here is a short list of some of the most popular:
• Tropical Hibiscus are great and can take the heat. They also come in a wide range of vibrant colors.
• Purslane are a blooming succulent. They do well in hanging baskets and are very drought tolerant.
• Sweet Potato vine is just what it sounds like. It comes in several colors with Chartreuse being the most popular. It grows like a weed and needs very little care.
If you want something that will live for several years or more, perennials are a great choice. A few Perennials that bloom in summer are Daylily, Daisies, Russian Sage, Gaillardia, and Helens Flower.
You also have some wonderful choices in shrubs that flower in summer.
These include:
• Roses are surprisingly hearty and heat tolerant. They come in a vast array of varieties and colors.
• Crape Mrytle, which comes in a huge selection of varieties from trees to dwarf sizes, are also an excellent choice for durability.
• Rose of Sharon, a deciduous flowering shrub, makes a great summer time hedge,
• Hydrangea, which comes in 23 species, has several varieties that are perfect for adding color and withstanding the warm temperatures.
