Capt. Darren Moore is a 22-year veteran of the Wichita Police Department. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1996 and is currently the commander of the Department's training academy. WPD still need recruits?
ANSWER:  When the current recruit class started on July 8th, all of the Department's open positions were filled.  This had not been accomplished for several years, and was only possible because of the increased number of applicants this year.  But the Department is continually seeking qualified candidates to fill future openings and is currently planning to start recruit classes in January and July of 2003.  Inquiries about how or where to apply may be directed to the City of Wichita Personnel Division at 268-4531, the WPD Pre-employment Section at 838-9611, or on-line at http://www.wichita/ police.com.What is the typical training a new recruit goes through?Police recruits receive 22 weeks of comprehensive training at the Wichita-Sedgwick County Law Enforcement Training Center.  The training includes both classroom and hands-on practical instruction.  The major topics include:-legal aspects of law enforcement, including constitutional law, state statutes, and city ordinances-community policing topics, including problem solving and conflict resolution-traffic safety and enforcement-principles and techniques of criminal investigations-defensive tactics-firearms -emergency vehicle operation-report writing-first aid/CPRAfter graduating from the 22-week training academy, each officer is assigned to an eight-week field training program.  During field training, they are paired with experienced officers to complete the learning process.What can he/she expect to earn once an officer?Recruit Officers are currently paid $14.85 an hour.  Upon graduation from the training academy it increases to $15.55 an hour.  In 2003, these rates increase to $15.52 an hour for Recruit Officers and $16.25 an hour for Police Officers.  In 2003, the pay scale for Police Officer tops out at $22.96 per hour, Detectives at $25.23 per hour, and Sergeants at $25.76 per hour.  Officers also receive twelve vacation days per year during their first year, with increases for seniority up to a maximum of 25 days per year, eleven paid holidays, sick leave, shift pay, education pay, health and life insurance, an initial uniform issue and yearly uniform allowance, a generous retirement plan, and many other benefits.
