Bathroom tile options
A: You probably noticed that there are many choices in tile for your home. That can make the job of choosing them seem daunting, but not all of them are right for the job. Before you choose, it is important to know that not every tile is right for the bathroom, and some that work in the bathroom, may not work well in the shower. So you can see, it may take doing a little homework before making your final decision. Because of the high amount of moisture, only certain tile can be used successfully. Look for vitreous tile, or tile that absorbs water very reluctantly if at all. This will include glazed ceramic or porcelain. Using vitreous tile is especially important in shower floor pans. Natural or non-vitreous tile will need to be sealed but can be used for shower walls, counters and floors. If you love the natural look, consider tiles that look like the natural material but are manufactured to withstand the wet conditions in the shower. Another consideration when choosing tile is how slick it is when it is wet. Smaller tiles, such as mosaic tiles provide greater slip resistance with plenty of grouted seams. Additional advantages to mosaic tile in the shower is that it requires less cutting and forms to the slope of the shower pan which assures better drainage. Keeping those things in mind, the choices in tile should narrow a bit, and give you a great place to start your design.
