How do I assure my loved one gets a balanced diet?
A- One of the ways to encourage her to get enough to eat is to provide plenty of opportunities for social eating. Socialization in the dining room setting and eating with peers makes a big difference alone in itself than eating something by your self as it encourages residents to linger at the table, continue to nibble and eat more foods. Also, a “May I Take Your Order” Dining service otherwise known as restaurant style dining many be very beneficial to her as well. As opposed to a fixed (like it or leave it) meal arrangement, the “May I Take Your Order” plan is just that, residents get to order and choose what they want to eat, each day, each meal. For example, in this arrangement, residents get up in the morning when they are ready and go to the dining room on their own time frame and may order just toast and coffee or as big as 2 eggs poached, toast, sausage, bacon and cereal. There may also be a daily special such as waffles, biscuits & gravy, croissants, pancakes, French toast or omelets. In this arrangement, meal orders for lunch and diner are taken at breakfast, with the resident having choices from a list of common favorites or from a daily meal designed by a nutritionist. With a list of choices, she may be more likely to eat and enjoy her meal. Mealtime has always been a mix of nourishment and socialization. Keeping that in place will help assure that your mom enjoys a healthy meal enjoyed over plenty of great conversation.
