What should I consider for someone aging in place?
A- Once accessibility issues have been addressed, the next thing to consider is the décor. When considering decorating, think about safety, comfort, and hospitality issues. It sounds like you want the environment to be beautiful but functional. I would start by keeping safety in mind. Avoid things like loose rugs that can be a tripping hazard, or over crowding a space with furniture. Another factor that should guide your choices is anticipating future needs and space usage. Remember that as your parents age, it may be necessary to have room for medical supplies and equipment. Opt for useful pieces of furniture that you can move easily. Make convenience part of the design by finding creative ways to store most used items within easy reach. Lighting is important, especially when your sight might become impaired. This makes lighting not only a design element, but also safety consideration. Add extra lighting to hallways and be sure that each room can be illuminated from the point of entry. Secure all of your pictures and other décor items so that they cannot fall or otherwise become a hazard. Your parents also have years of memories that are probably stored pictures and other keepsakes. Be sure to create a space where they can display their treasure safely and make the space their own. If you want to encourage your parents to remain as active and social as possible, factor in hospitality in your design. Create a comfortable place for guests and a place to enjoy their favorite activities. This is also the most important consideration in making the space their own and in you being able to come over to their space just to enjoy their company.
