How have computers changed auto repair?
A- So true. Technology has simplified and complicated many things and has touched every industry. It certainly has changed auto engine repair. Today, auto repair specialists must be skilled in both mechanics and sophisticated computer programs & analyzers that are now part of their toolbox.
You probably have noticed that solid-state computers have taken over the automotive diagnostic nerve center; running and monitoring everything from engine RPM’s to brake systems. We need to update our computers yearly to keep up with the newer cars and new sensors. Computers give us an idea of what area to look for the problem but our mechanics will need to research to find out what's wrong.
There are many advantages to the reliance on technology. One advantage is that with the technology, the car can do a certain amount of self-diagnosis when there is a problem. Another advantage is that these technologies can allow technicians to fine tune things like timing and fuel in real time for greater power and efficiency.
Naturally, these technologies require a separate level of knowledge, beyond the specialized knowledge of mechanics. It also takes specialized programs and major equipment. If you have a newer car, you will certainly want to find a specialist skilled and equipped in these new technologies to better assure proper repair.
