Explaining palliative care
A- Palliative Care is a multi-discipline approach that helps a person through the pain, discomfort and stress of a serious illness. While Palliative Care for a patient includes physicians, pharmacists and nurses, it also involves pastoral and social services. Through these areas we help patients with their pain and symptoms to allow them to enjoy a good quality of life for as long as possible. Q: How does Palliative Care help a patient through a serious illness? A: One key is to keep patients comfortable by treating symptoms that may include nausea, fatigue, pain, depression and anxiety. Once a person is comfortable, they are able to remain active and independent, which has a direct positive effect on a person’s quality of life. Through Palliative Care we are able to help patients during every stage of an illness, while they are being treated medically. Q: How does Palliative Care help families who have loved ones suffering from a serious illness? A: Because of the number of disciplines involved in our program, we often have clinical answers and the emotional assistance a patient and family needs. Serious illnesses can mean difficult medical decisions for a family, and we are there to provide the help and support that is needed. Palliative Care also works to find services that are key to a patient and a family after leaving the hospital. Q: How important is it to inquire about a Palliative Care program? A: Palliative Care has been shown to provide the best possible care for serious illness. By relieving pain and addressing symptoms, patients and their families are ultimately happier. It’s also important to be informed about the transition between the hospital and other health care settings, and Palliative Care works with patients and families to make that transition easier.
