Many baseball greats have stepped foot on Pittsburg’s JayCee Ball Park at one time or another.

I’ve heard stories about Hall of Famers Mickey Mantle and Satchel Paige playing there. Bubba Starling, a first-round pick of the Kansas City Royals, played a high school game at JayCee. With all the minor league games of the Pittsburg Browns, barnstorming events, all-star tournaments and high school and American Legion games, there are endless stories and memories that trace back to JayCee Ball Park. But one of the coolest stories happened just 10 years ago. On June 24, 2003, the USA Baseball Junior National team, which consisted of 27 of the best 17 and 18-year-old baseball players in the United States, played a single game against a group of Southeast Kansas All-Stars. Team USA included Kansas City Royals designated hitter and All-Star Billy Butler, Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Neil Walker, New York Yankees outfielder Brennan Boesch, Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Daniel Bard, Washington Nationals relief pitcher Erik Davis, Miami Marlins infielder Chris Valaika, Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Alex Presley, former Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Jeff Manship and 2004 No. 1 overall draft pick Matt Bush. The SEK All-Stars roster included Pittsburg’s Garrett Forsythe, Cliff Wheeler and Jordan Garner, St. Mary’s-Colgan’s V.J. VanBecelaere, Nick Dellasega and Kenny Hallacy, Fort Scott’s Darryl Graham, Chanute’s Daniel Waggoner and Joe Bogle, Parsons’ Thomas Grillot, Girard’s T.J. Franklin and Quin Vinze, Humboldt’s Cole Rink, Baxter Springs’ Darrell Dinger and Columbus’ Rhett Murray. Don Gutteridge, who spent more than 60 years in professional baseball as a player, coach, manager and scout was the honorary manager, while Mike Watt and Gary Grimaldi served as the primary coaches. “It will be a great memory to look back and say, ‘Hey, I played against that guy,’” Franklin was quoted as saying in the following day’s edition of The Morning Sun. “It’s an excellent opportunity for all of us. It’s a once in a lifetime deal.” And the group from southeast Kansas made some good memories against a team filled with future professional baseball players. Team USA won 8-3, but led only 1-0 entering the top of the fifth inning. Dinger allowed only one run over three innings of work. SEK’s four pitchers -- Dinger, Garner, VanBecelaere and Waggoner -- combined for nine strikeouts over the nine innings. Franklin, a catcher, was 2-for-4 with an RBI and threw out two runners attempting to steal. Forsythe cracked a two-run double. Team USA also had its share of highlights. Bush homered off the center field wall. Seth Garrison, who played for seasons in the Boston Red Sox organization, recorded an inside-the-park home run. Presley and Bush doubled. The capacity crowd at JayCee Ball Park also got to see a unique sight. Butler, who has affectionately become known as “Country Breakfast” to Kansas City Royals fans, took the mound at JayCee Ball Park. The stalky Royals designated hitter, who was then used primarily as a third baseman, pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

Much of the luster was absent from the 2013 NFL Draft.

Potential franchise quarterbacks like Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III weren’t available this time around. However, this year’s draft was critically important for the Kansas City Chiefs. Plus, this draft has more in common with 2012 than you might think. As you know, the Kansas City Chiefs used the No. 1 overall selection to pick offensive tackle Eric Fisher. The 6-foot-7, 305-pound lineman from Central Michigan is known as a good pass blocker with a great frame. The 2-14 Chiefs needed an upgrade to an offensive line that had trouble protecting quarterbacks Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn last season. Kansas City believes Fisher will be a step in the right direction. Kansas City liked Fisher so much that it chose the small-school prospect over Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel, who many considered to be the best player in the draft. After the Chiefs opted for Fisher, the Jacksonville Jaguars quickly swooped in and grabbed Joeckel with the No. 2 pick. In Joeckel, the Jaguars obtained a 6-6, 306-pound lineman who protected the blind sides of quarterbacks Ryan Tannehill and Johnny Manziel in recent years. Scouts like his athleticism and power. And this is where the 2012 and 2013 drafts become similar. As Luck and RGIII will always be linked and forever compared against each other, so will Fisher and Joeckel. Add in that the Philadelphia Eagles used the No. 4 pick on Oklahoma offensive tackle Lane Johnson and the San Diego Chargers selected Alabama offensive tackle D.J. Fluker, this draft will always be remembered as the year the linemen ruled. Any time a team owns the No. 1 pick, there will always be scrutiny over whether it picked the best available player. But with this draft, that scrutiny will increase since the Chiefs had so many reasonable options at offensive tackle. If Fisher is a bust and Joeckel becomes a Hall of Famer, the Chiefs will forever be ridiculed for that choice. Obviously, this is an extreme example, but it illustrates the importance of the pick. The Kansas City Royals had the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 MLB draft and selected pitcher Luke Hochevar over third baseman Evan Longoria and pitchers Clayton Kershaw, Tim Lincecum and Max Scherzer. The Royals are still feeling the effects of that poor choice. That’s why ESPN reports before this draft were so concerning. The reports indicated the Chiefs were leaning toward Fisher because they weren’t able to trade current left tackle Branden Albert and that the Central Michigan lineman would be an easier adjustment to right tackle. If that is indeed why the Chiefs selected Fisher and not because they believe he is a better football player than Joeckel, then a terrible mistake was made. Years later, all that will be remembered is who the lineman was. If it turns out to be Joeckel, then no one will care that it was more convenient to move Fisher to right tackle for a year or two. The new management of the Chiefs was given a golden opportunity of selecting the best college football player in the nation. Did the Chiefs make the most of that opportunity? Only time will tell.

The Wichita State Shockers’ success in this year’s NCAA Tournament surprised a lot of people. Not me.

OK, I’m not saying I predicted the Shockers to reach the Final Four, but mid-major schools like WSU are proving their worth in basketball year after year. Whether it’s Butler, VCU, Gonzaga or Wichita State, mid-major schools are quite capable in today’s world of college basketball. The Missouri Valley Conference, in particular, has shown it belongs. And while this was the first time for a Missouri Valley school to reach the Final Four since Larry Bird led the Indiana State Sycamores in 1979, six MVC schools have reached the Sweet 16 since 2000. This past year, the Missouri Valley received two bids, while the Big 12 advanced six teams to the NCAA Tournament. Even though the Big 12 had three times the opportunities the Missouri Valley did, the two conferences ended up with the same amount of teams in the Sweet 16. The Kansas Jayhawks were the Big 12’s last representative and were eliminated in the Sweet 16 by Michigan. Wichita State, meanwhile, represented the MVC for two more rounds before falling to eventual champion Louisville in the Final Four. Since 2010, the Missouri Valley has brought six teams to the NCAA Tournament and advanced two to the Sweet 16. During that same time, the Big 12 has brought 24 teams to the tourney and advanced six to the round of 16. The Missouri Valley owns a 15-19 record in the NCAA Tournament over the past decade. The 2004 season is the only time in the past 10 years that the MVC had two teams in the tournament and didn’t win at least one game. Of course, Kansas and other major schools are still getting the top high school prospects. But while it is becoming more and more common for those top players to leave school for the NBA after one year, schools like Wichita State and Butler have the opportunity to mold a group of players for four years. The senior with above average talent is quite capable of beating the freshman with extreme talent. Experience does count for something. There is no doubt the gap between major conferences like the Big 12 and mid-major conferences like the Missouri Valley has lessened. Overall, the big conferences are stronger, but the days of a middle of the pack team from a major conference easily beating a top school from a small conference are over. Wichita State was the final Kansas team standing. And we should no longer be “shocked” by that.

Baseball season is here. I can already smell the hot dogs and hear the umpire say, “play ball.” For Kansas City Royals fans, this is a time for hope that the team will start a winning tradition. With that said, I will take this time to address some of the most pressing questions regarding the 2013 Kansas City Royals season. Q: How much will the additions of James Shields, Wade Davis and Ervin Santana improve the Royals’ starting rotation? A: The positive thing is that there is nowhere to go but up. Kansas City’s 2012 rotation of Bruce Chen, Luke Hochevar, Jonathan Sanchez and others was one of the worst in major league baseball. Since the Royals didn’t hit terribly well either, poor starts often meant the game was over after a few innings. There’s no doubt the rotation should be improved. However, the Royals aren’t exactly the 1998 Atlanta Braves of Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz either. Shields should be Kansas City’s best opening day starter since Zack Greinke and second best since Bret Saberhagen. However, we have to keep in perspective the fact that last year Shields was the second or third best pitcher on a Tampa Bay Rays team that didn’t make the playoffs. Playing on a team with a lineup far superior to the Royals over the past four years, Shields has a record of only 55-49 during that span. So, yes, Shields should be an improvement. But let’s remember that the Royals didn’t trade for Bob Gibson either. The hope is that he will eat innings and give the Royals a realistic chance to win. He should do that. Davis didn’t make Tampa Bay’s rotation last year. However, he did pitch well with a 3-0 record and 2.43 ERA in 54 relief appearances. There are plenty of things to like about the 6-foot-5 and 27-year-old Davis. But, again, you probably shouldn’t get overly excited when a pitcher who lost his rotation spot on a team that didn’t make the playoffs is considered an improvement to your rotation. Concerns about his shoulder don’t help matters. Santana is a name, but he struggled considerably last year with the Angels. He was 9-13 with a 5.16 ERA over 30 starts last season. The hope is that he can return to all-star form when he was 16-7 with a 3.49 ERA in 2008. We’ll see. Jeremy Guthrie could be the most important piece of this rotation. Guthrie appeared to find new life when he joined the Royals midseason last year. After joining the Royals, Guthrie was 5-3 with a 3.16 ERA over 14 starts. The Royals need him to repeat that performance in 2013. The realistic goal of this rotation should be to give the Royals the opportunity to win. But if the Royals are to take the next step and make the playoffs, it will need to be because they have great position players and good pitching – not the other way around. Q: Will Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas become stars in 2013? A: Royals fans certainly hope so. And if this team is going to become a winner, they will have to do so. Since there was so much attention on how poor the starting pitching was last year, the struggles of Hosmer and Moustakas were downplayed a little. The expectations were that both players would be instants stars who could hit for average and power. While those expectations probably weren’t fair to begin with, neither player came close to those hopes. Hosmer followed his solid rookie season by hitting .232 with 14 home runs. He often looked lost at the plate, and his swing appeared long. Moustakas showed flashes, but he finished the season with a .242 batting average and 20 home runs. While he displayed some pop in his bat, he didn’t provide enough power to make up for such a low batting average and on-base percentage (.296). The good news is that both were above average in the field, and they are still very young. But if the Royals are going to make the playoffs, Hosmer and Moustakas must emerge as dangerous hitters. Q: What should the Royals do with Jeff Francoeur? A: Since the Royals signed Francoeur to a two-year deal before last season, the team’s only real option is to hold on to him for at least the first few months. The hope is that the Royals will get the “Frenchy” that hit .285 with 20 homers in 2011 instead of the one who hit .235 with 16 homers in 2012. But how the Royals are doing at the trade deadline will have just as much to do with decisions regarding Francouer’s future in Kansas City. If the Royals are in contention at the deadline and Francouer is playing well, Kansas City will hold on to him through the rest of the season. If the Royals aren’t in contention and Francouer is playing well, he will be dealt to a team in the hunt. If the Royals are in contention despite the poor play of Francouer, they must dump him and be buyers at the deadline. If Frenchy plays like he did last year and Kansas City isn’t within striking distance, it really won’t matter.

The attention toward college football recruiting seems to be magnified each year.

Fans want to know who the star players are going to be and which teams “won” and which teams “lost” the recruiting season. This is fun to chat about in sports bars or diners, but the reality is that most of this remains a mystery until the players actually strap on a helmet and learn how they will fit in. Are they being utilized in the best position and will their personalities fit in with the team concept? These are questions that are at least several months away from answering. Still as fans, we will chat, send tweets and try to envision the future. With that said, here is a look at the Pittsburg State Gorillas’ recent college football recruiting class. The quick thing to notice is that the Gorillas obviously were focused on improving the offensive line. Pittsburg State signed three college transfers – Butler Community College’s Zachary Burkhart (6-3, 285) and Jesse Ingle (6-2, 280) and Coffeyville Community College’s Ethan Smith (6-2, 255) – to help fill immediate holes and seven high school players to groom as future leaders on the offensive line. Burkhart and Ingle were All-Jayhawk Conference selections, and several of the high school signees have potential. Bo Farrow (6-2, 250) was listed on Rivals.com as a two-star recruit out of Broken Arrow High School after earning an Oklahoma Class 6A All-State selection as a senior. He also was the 6A state champion in the discus and shot put. Jacob Ralph (6-5, 280) also is a lineman with potential for the Gorillas after being a two-time all-conference selection at Shiloh Christian in Bentonville, Ark. Other key recruits include junior safety Isaac Maselera (6-0, 190), who transferred after two seasons at Division I Oklahoma State. Maselera played two seasons for the Cowboys after being an Oklahoma Class 4A All-State performer at Glenpool High School. Coming out of high school, he was listed by Rivals.com as a three-star recruit and as the No. 18 player in Oklahoma. Deontre Youngblood, a freshman defensive back out of East Central High School in Tulsa, Okla., was a second-team Class 5A All-State defensive back after registering four interceptions and three punt returns for touchdowns as a senior. According to Rivals, Youngblood was receiving Division I attention from Kansas State, Kansas, Arkansas State and Tulsa. Q-What are your thoughts on the recent Kansas City Chiefs hirings?

A-Four years ago, the Kansas City Chiefs decided it was time to rebuild. The organization said goodbye to head coach Herm Edwards and longtime general manager Carl Peterson, hiring former New England Patriots executive Scott Pioli to run the football operations and former Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley to coach the team. Pioli was a “my way or the highway” general manager who was determined to run every facet of the organization. Haley, who is the son of former NFL executive Dick Haley, climbed the coaching ladder despite never playing a down of football – even at the high school level. To say that the Chiefs have approached their second attempt at rebuilding differently would be an understatement. This time around, Kansas City hired its head coach first, naming longtime Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid. It’s fair to say that Reid is the anti-Haley. A former college lineman with 13 years of experience as an NFL head coach, Reid earns a level of instant respect from his players and assistant coaches. In 2009, the Chiefs hired Haley based on potential. Reid was hired based on experience and past performance. Instead of bringing in an “all powerful” GM to run the organization, the Chiefs hired former Green Bay Packers executive John Dorsey after Reid and the offensive and defensive coordinators had already been hired. Reid has led the Eagles to the Super Bowl, and Dorsey has built a resume that includes finding solid quarterbacks and hidden gems in the draft. There’s no doubt the Chiefs seem to be moving in a better direction. With that said, the extreme opposite of a bad choice isn’t always a great decision. Lack of water can kill a plant. However, too much water can have the same result. Typically, the best results are usually found somewhere in the middle. Reid has been a great coach, and Dorsey has credibility throughout the league. However, personal problems, including the loss of a son, made Reid appear worn down and tired in his final season with the Eagles. There also is potential for conflict with the way the Chiefs handled hiring the coach before his boss. This isn’t meant to be a downer. On paper, these are good hires. But the point is, Pioli and Haley also were good hires on paper at the time. But games aren’t won during coaching and GM press conferences. If Dorsey and Reid are to right the ship in Kansas City, it all starts with the Chiefs’ No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft in April. That selection should set the tone for the future of the organization. With a good draft, coupled with some solid free agent signings and a little luck, the Chiefs could very well be on the right path. Still, there is a lot of work ahead.

Off and on for five years until this past October, I wrote a column on the Kansas City Royals for The Topeka Capital-Journal. During that time, I was often bombarded by Royals fans who were frustrated by what they viewed as a lack of effort by management and ownership to win games. Constantly, I fielded complaints from fans who were tired of being told the Royals would be good in a few years when the next crop of prospects arrived. Following a team that hasn¹t made the postseason since 1985 and hasn’t had a winning record since 2003, Kansas City fans have grown impatient. Plenty of the criticism has been justified. Owner David Glass gave former general manager Allard Baird little chance of being successful. The resources at the major league level were few. The resources for the minor leagues were next to nothing. By the time Glass hired Dayton Moore in 2006, the Royals had little of value on the major league roster and even less in terms of prospects. It has been a long, grueling process Royals fans have had to endure since that time. “Just wait, things will change once Alex Gordon and Billy Butler get here.” The losing continued. “Just wait, the Royals will win once Mike Moustakas and Eric Hosmer reach the big leagues.” The losses kept piling up. As should be expected, many Royals fans were tired of waiting. For better or worse on Dec. 9, the days of waiting for prospects ended. The Royals traded minor league player of the year Wil Myers, top pitching prospect Jake Odorizzi, former top pitching prospect Mike Montgomery and third base prospect Patrick Leonard to the Tampa Bay Rays for starting pitchers James Shields and Wade Davis. There has been much debate since this trade was made. However, there is one thing that shouldn’t be debated. For all of those fans who have criticized the organization for not doing enough to build a winner, at the very least they should respect the Royals for making that commitment. The Royals will never be the Yankees. They will never be able to have a payroll that competes with the top 5 or 10 percent of the teams in the league. But this season, the Royals are dedicating all the resources (a payroll of about $80 million) that should be reasonably expected. The Royals aren’t telling fans to wait for Myers, Odorizzi and Montgomery. Instead, they have made the message clear that they are trying to win now. No matter how they feel about the trade, that message deserves a certain level of respect. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t respect what the Royals are trying to do and still be critical of the trade. It doesn’t have to be black and white. There are plenty of reasons to like the trade, and there are plenty of reasons to be concerned. Here are five reasons to like the trade: - The Royals are dedicated to winning. That commitment not only sends a message to the fans, but it also sends a pretty powerful message to current Royals players, such as Butler, Gordon, Hosmer and Moustakas. It is telling the likes of Butler and Gordon that they made the right decision in signing extensions in Kansas City. It is telling Hosmer and Moustakas that it is something they should consider. And there is no doubt the Royals are a better team today than they were at the end of 2012. - On paper, the Royals starting pitching rotation improved immensely. A year ago, Bruce Chen was Kansas City’s opening-day starter. As of mid-December, it appeared Chen could either be the No. 5 starter or not making the rotation. There is no doubt that on paper a rotation of Shields, Jeremy Guthrie, Ervin Santana, Davis and either Chen, Luke Hochevar, Will Smith or Luis Mendoza would be a marked improvement from 2012. - Shields will be the best opening-day starter the Royals have sent to the mound since Zack Greinke. Psychologically, that means a great deal. - Right or wrong, it never seemed Royals management viewed Myers as highly as they did Hosmer or Moustakas when they were in the minors. - If the Royals felt Odorizzi or Montgomery could be star pitchers in the majors over the next couple of years, they would have never traded them. Here are five reasons to be concerned about the trade: - James Shields’ numbers could be misleading since his best games came at a pitcher-friendly stadium in Tampa Bay. - Guthrie, Santana and Davis are upgrades on paper, but they all have major question marks. Guthrie and Santana were each terrible in the first half of 2012, and Davis was a relief pitcher for the Rays last season. - On paper, the Royals still aren’t as good as the AL Central defending champion Detroit Tigers. The Royals’ first three starters of Shields, Guthrie and Santana are still no match for Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer and Doug Fister. Plus, the Royals don’t have a hitter that is anywhere close to the level of Miguel Cabrera or Prince Fielder. - While Shields is a significant upgrade for the Royals, the reality is that he was the second or third best pitcher on a team that didn’t make the playoffs last year. Kansas City is counting on him to be the ace. - Myers could be a bona fide star. If the Royals don’t win with Shields and Davis in the next two years and Myers emerges as a consistent All-Star, then the embarrassment from this trade will linger for years. The next two years will have more impact on the future direction of the organization than any others in recent history. If it works, the Royals could quickly become a model for small market teams, and free agents could begin to look at Kansas City as a destination. If it fails, Moore and manager Ned Yost will be gone, and the rebuilding efforts will begin yet another chapter.

It has been a lot of fun reminiscing about football in southeast Kansas over the past few months. There truly have been many great teams and players who have competed on area fields over the years.

In my third and final segment of looking back on the history of football in southeast Kansas, I’m going to provide a variety of quick tidbits and trivia regarding the sport in this corner of the state. Some of this may be new and some of this you may already know. Either way, it’s never a bad time to highlight the great players, teams and games from this tradition-rich area. For instance, did you know? * St. Mary’s-Colgan is tied with Smith Center for the most undefeated seasons in state history with 7. * The Panthers own the little known record of most fumbles recovered in a season with 35 in 1999. Colgan finished as Class 2-1A runner-up to Claflin that season. * Chanute boasted 493 interception return yards in 2005, which still stands as a state record. * Riverton kicker David Bond has the record for most extra points in a game with 11 against Cherryvale in 1989. * St. Paul’s Corey Grosdidier ran back six punt returns for touchdowns in 1994, which remains an 8-Man state record. * Pittsburg High School has had 51 players selected to compete in the Kansas Shrine Bowl in the game’s history from 1974-2012. Dayton earned MVP honors, however a guy by the name of Barry Sanders broke his record the following year. The record now belongs to Wichita Southeast’s Rashad Washington with 243 yards in 1999. * Chet Kuplen, a Frontenac graduate who runs Kansas-sports.com, has helped me remember many other great area athletes from recent history. Who else remembers Independence’s Jay Alexander, Riverton’s Andy Ball, St. Paul’s Jarrett Grosdidier, Riverton’s Zach Martin, Coffeyville’s Mondriel Fulcher, Fort Scott’s Bob Goltra, Pittsburg’s Poncho Sales, Fort Scott’s Travis Stepps, Southeast’s Jerry Ross, Derrick Rider and Clint Rider, Northeast’s Ryan Clark and Iola’s Ryan Lonergan. * One of the most memorable seasons for football in southeast Kansas was in 2000. That season, the area was represented in state championship games in every classification from 8-Man Division I to Class 5A with St. Paul, Colgan, Frontenac, Fort Scott and Pittsburg all playing in title games. St. Paul, Colgan and Fort Scott all brought home titles. * Pittsburg State’s Carnie Smith Stadium also has had several great players from other teams take the field over the years. Carolina Panthers star quarterback Cam Newton led Blinn Community College to a national championship win over Fort Scott Community College in the 2009 Citizens Bank Bowl. Tampa Bay Bucs linebacker Lavonte David played for the Greyhounds in that same game. Former Denver Broncos and Missouri Southern standout Rod Smith is another great player who has had his cleats on Brandenburg Field. I know there are plenty more great athletes and moments that I left out. But that’s what makes southeast Kansas football so remarkable. We could go on and on listing all of the great athletes and accomplishments. I hope you enjoyed taking a trip back as much as I did.

There’s a reason former Crawford County Convention and Visitors’ Bureau director Craig Hull referred to this county in the corner of the state as The Football Capital of Kansas.

Simply, it’s because it has produced winning football teams. In the second installment of a series looking back on the history of football in southeast Kansas, I will give an overview of the great team accomplishments at the college and high school levels over the years. The Pittsburg State Gorillas are one of the premier football programs in all of NCAA Division II. Pitt State is the defending national champion, winning its second D-II title in 2011 and fourth national title overall. The Gorillas’ other D-II title came in 1991, while they captured NAIA championships in 1957 and 1961. Pitt State has won 11 MIAA titles and has produced two Harlon Hill winners – Ronnie West and Ronald Moore -- and 120 NCAA All-Americans. Over the past 20 years or so, numerous Gorillas have made it to the NFL, including West, Moore, punter Brian Moorman, long snapper Kendall Gammon and defensive back Darryl Wren. Three current Gorillas – linebacker Nate Dreiling, wide receiver John Brown and defensive end Gus Toca – were named preseason All-Americans by D2football.com. The Gorilla program also has quite the coaching tree. Current Texas State coach Dennis Franchione, who also has coached at Alabama, Texas A&M and TCU, helped build the program into a powerhouse in the late 1980s. Chuck Broyles took over in 1990 and went on to have one of the best records in Division II history, going 198-47-2 and leading the Gorillas to one national title (1991) and three other title game appearances (1992, 1995 and 2004). Current TCU coach Gary Patterson and current Minnesota coach Jerry Kill have been assistants at Pitt State. Pittsburg High School also has a storied tradition. The Purple Dragons football team has advanced to the Kansas High School Activities Association playoffs 28 times, winning state titles in 1983, 1988 and 1990. The Dragons also won a state title in 1954, before the playoff system started. Pittsburg has produced several great players over the years, including the Meier brothers. Kerry Meier, a star receiver at KU, is on the Atlanta Falcons roster, while Shad Meier played several seasons in the NFL as a tight end for the Tennessee Titans and New Orleans Saints. Adam Meier played as a defensive back for Pittsburg State and the late Dylan Meier was a quarterback at Kansas State. Other top PHS products include former Colorado State quarterback Kevin Verdugo, as well as Brian Hutchins, Brian Pinamonti and Matt Pinamonti, who all had solid careers at Pitt State. The St. Mary’s-Colgan Panthers hold the state’s top winning percentage at nearly 81 percent with 556 victories in the program’s history. While Colgan’s program has been good for decades, it took the success to another level in the early 2000s. During that stretch, the Panthers own the state’s second longest winning streak with 66 consecutive victories. Colgan won four consecutive Class 2-1A state titles from 2000 to 2003 before falling to Smith Center in the 2004 state title game. Colgan’s Chuck Smith is one of only six coaches in Kansas history to earn 300 wins. In addition to the titles in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003, Smith also coached Colgan to a state title in 1984. Before Smith, the Panthers were coached by Frank Crespino, who directed Colgan to state championships in 1974 and 1975 and is in the KSHSAA Hall of Fame. Frontenac, with 631 wins in its program history, is second to only Lawrence for all-time victories in the state. The Raiders have advanced to several state title games and won the 2-1A state championship in 1994. Girard had several strong teams under the late Craig Crespino and now is building some more tradition under former Frontenac coach Leon Miller. Southeast and Northeast are both experiencing their best seasons in recent history under coaches Clint Rider and Phil Hobbs, respectively.

If you’re like me, football will soon be occupying your weekends through the entire fall.

In football-crazy southeast Kansas, we love the Friday night lights of prep football, the Big 12 and MIAA on Saturdays, and, of course, the NFL on Sundays. Southeast Kansas has its fingerprints on each football night of the week. Over the next few months, The SE Kansas Q&A Times Journal will take a look at the great history of football in this corner of the state. This month, we will look at some of the current NFL players with ties to One of the NFL’s best punters was an All-American in football and track and field at Pittsburg State University. Buffalo Bills’ punter Brian Moorman is a two-time Pro Bowl player and a two-time All-Pro. He was selected as the punter of the decade for the 2000s and was named to the Buffalo Bills’ 50th anniversary team. Moorman was a four-time All-American punter at Pitt State and was named to the first team as a junior and senior. He also was a 10-time All-American in track and field, winning three consecutive Division II national championships in the 400 meter hurdles from 1997-99. The Sedgwick, Kan., native enters his 12th season in the NFL, all with the Buffalo Bills. NFL rosters also include a couple of players who competed in the high school’s Southeast Kansas League (SEK). Pittsburg High School product Kerry Meier, who was an All-State quarterback for the Dragons and an All-conference wide receiver for the Kansas Jayhawks, enters the 2012 season on the Atlanta Falcons’ injured reserve list. Former Parsons’ Vikings’ star Shaun Hill is Matthew Stafford’s backup at quarterback for the Detroit Lions. Hill enters his 11th NFL season, previously playing for the Minnesota Vikings and the San Francisco 49ers. With Stafford hurt most of the season in 2010, Hill started 10 games for the Lions and threw for 2,686 yards and 16 touchdowns. Hill’s time was limited last year as Stafford remained healthy. However, the Lions know they have a more-than-capable reserve if Stafford gets hurt again. Sometimes forgotten, southeast Kansas also is represented in the NFL by numerous players who attended Fort Scott and Coffeyville community colleges. The Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds not only have players in the NFL, but they boast one of the league’s best defensive players in the New York Giants’ defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. The former Greyhound recorded 16.5 sacks in 2011 and helped the Giants to a Super Bowl win. The Giants’ roster also includes former Greyhound Jacquian Williams at linebacker. Williams also earned a Super Bowl ring last year as he helped the Giants on special teams and started two games at middle linebacker in 2011. FSCC product Lavonte David begins his rookie season at linebacker with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after being selected in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Former Fort Scott CC quarterback Dominique Davis made the Atlanta Falcons’ roster out of training camp after signing a free agent deal in the offseason. San Francisco 49ers’ running back Brandon Jacobs, Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive lineman Ryan Lilja, Houston Texans’ defensive back Jonathan Joseph and Seattle Seahawks’ offensive lineman James Carpenter all played for Coffeyville Community College. Fall brings with it some wonderful things—beautiful fall colors, the start of another school year, and of course fall sports. Along with those sports come injuries, some being minor, and some major. Contact sports such as football make the athlete the most vulnerable, but other fall sports such as volleyball and cross country bring their fair share of injuries as well. We recently sat down with Dr. John Yost, Orthopedic Surgeon at Girard Medical Center to gain some expert perspective on sports injuries.

Q&A Times: Does the rate of sport injury between adult and teen athletes differ? Dr. Yost: Yes. The highest incidents of injuries in athletics are at college age followed by high school age. Q&A Times: Do the injuries affect teens and adults in the same way? Dr. Yost: There are different types of injuries with younger vs. older people – younger people are more prone to have a dislocated shoulder, torn ACL in knee, or a sprained ankle. As we get older we’re more at risk for rotator cuff injuries of the shoulder, torn meniscus in the knee and ruptured Achilles tendon in ankle. Q&A Times: What are the most common types of injuries in HS football/sports and do these injuries pose a threat to future health? Dr. Yost: The most common injuries include ankle sprains, ligament injuries to the knee, shoulder dislocation, concussion, and hand injuries. In the present day in age with proper treatment these injuries should not pose a threat to future health. Q&A Times: How should they be treated? Dr. Yost: Most minor injuries respond to rest, ice, compression, elevation. More significant injuries require surgical intervention. Dr. John Yost went to college, Graduate School and Medical School at the University of Nebraska and received an MD. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Yost not only treats athletes, but is an athlete himself. His interests are cycling swimming and running and he often participates in Triathlons and qualified for the 2012 USA Triathlon Olympic-Distance National Championship after finishing in the top 10% in his age group at the Shawnee Mission Triathlon.

2012 Crawford County Football Preview

Southeast Lancers In his first year as a head coach, Southeast’s Clint Rider had a chance to gain experience and learn from his mistakes. Likewise, Rider returns a slew of players who earned valuable experience last season. The Lancers welcome 14 seniors, and all 11 starters on each side of the ball are back. “The experience factor carrying over from last year will be a huge benefit,” Southeast head coach Clint Rider said. “Having a better understanding of our new schemes implemented last season will allow us to progress to a more competitive level throughout the summer and into the season. A talented class of incoming freshmen will also allow for more competition during practices.” Not that there isn’t plenty of work to be done. Southeast finished just 1-8 a year ago and was picked to finish seventh in the 2012 ESPN 99.1 Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League Coaches Poll. Plus, the Lancers will have a difficult schedule, opening on the road against CNC League newcomer Columbus on Aug. 30. Senior Josh Thompson is slated to direct Rider’s pistol offense at quarterback. Thompson will have a lot of familiar targets at his disposal with Daniel Peak, Ryan Rakestraw and Avi Sharma at wide receiver and Jason Reed at tight end. Peak earned All-State honorable mention last season. Senior Quinton Tyree returns at running back, while Justin Galloway, Bryce Blockburger, Bryan Horgan, Dakota Westervelt and Cameron Clark are poised to man the offensive line. Galloway, Riley Ulery, Colton Charlton and Brian Thompson return to the defensive line, while Rakestraw, Reed and Horgan lead the corps of linebackers. The Vikings football team enters the 2012 season on an 18-game losing streak and Phil Hobbs owns a 1-35 record in four years as Northeast’s head coach. However, Hobbs and the Vikings believe they can start to turn the team in the right direction. Northeast moves down to Class 2-1A this season. The Vikings were predicted to finish third in the three-team Three Rivers League, according to the ESPN 99.1 league coaches poll. “We want to take each game one at a time, work hard be competitive every night,” Northeast head coach Phil Hobbs said. “We want to be mentally and physically tougher than our opponents. We want to improve our execution offensively and finish plays defensively.” There were big holes in the defense last season as the Vikings allowed 46.7 points per game. However, the offense began to show signs of life under the direction of J.T. Richardson at quarterback. Richardson returns several weapons as well with fullback Antonio Slingluff, running back Killian Willard, wide receivers Nick Younge and Sam Brooks and linemen Dakota Gesslein, Joey McDowell and Mike Beasley. Those same players are expected to play big roles on defense. 2012 regular season prediction: 1-8 Northeast Vikings 2012 schedule Aug. 31 at Humboldt Sept. 7 FREDONIA Sept. 14 at Eureka Sept. 21 at Galena Sept. 28 JAYHAWK-LINN Oct. 5 LEON-BLUESTEM Oct. 12 at Olpe Oct. 19 LYNDON Oct. 26 at Oswego Frontenac Raiders As difficult as it may be, Frontenac Raiders head coach Mark Smith knows he can’t look ahead to his Week 4 battle on Sept. 21st against the St. Mary’s-Colgan Panthers. You see, Mark Smith was an All-State quarterback for Colgan in the early 2000s, helping the Panthers to a 54-0 record and four consecutive state championships during his high school career. Not only that, but Colgan is coached by Mark’s father, Chuck Smith. Still, Mark knows he can’t afford to look ahead. The Raiders have a difficult schedule and move up to Class 4A this season. “I’m looking forward to playing against Colgan and my Dad in Week 4,” the first-year head coach said. “The atmosphere will be exceptional that night, and we are very fortunate to have that game televised across the state of Kansas. I am most excited for the kids to show how hard they have worked and how good of a team they can be. We have three very important games before that, so our main focus right now is preparing to face Riverton on Aug. 31.” The goal for Mark Smith is to return the Raiders to their glory days and rekindle the rival with Colgan. Once one of the state’s best rivalries, the series is now lopsided as the Raiders haven’t beat Colgan since 1997. To put that in perspective, Mark Smith was a sixth-grader at St. Mary’s Elementary School at the time. Mark Smith appears to have the firepower to return as a power. The Raiders finished 5-5 a year ago and were picked to finish fifth in the CNC League. Frontenac has eight starters returning on offense and seven on defense, including All-State running back Bryce Burdette and All-State lineman Kylor McCartney. Quarterback Devon Keith, running back Ross Edge, wide receiver Tanner Craig, tight ends Taylor Johnson, Brett Macary and Nick Zafuta, and linemen Cody Lindbloom, John Murray and Garrett Tackett are among Frontenac’s key returners. “We have about 60 players, and that’s a blessing,” Mark Smith said during the ESPN 99.1 CNC coaches luncheon. “That creates a lot of competition. We’ll have a lot of senior leadership. We have 18 seniors out. Not all of them played last year, but any time you have that many seniors, it’s a good thing.” 2012 regular season prediction: 5-4 Frontenac Raiders 2012 Schedule Aug. 31 at Riverton Sept. 7 at Southeast Sept. 14 GALENA Sept. 21 at St. Mary’s-Colgan Sept. 28 ERIE Oct. 5 BAXTER SPRINGS Oct. 12 PARSONS Oct. 19 at Independence Oct. 25 GIRARD Girard Trojans The Girard Trojans return eight starters on each side of the ball from a team that missed the playoffs by the narrowest of margins a year ago. Girard was edged out of the Class 4A playoffs because of a one-point loss to the Independence Bulldogs. However, Girard head coach Leon Miller said his players seem committed to improving on last year’s 5-4 record. “We had a steady summer,” Miller said at the ESPN 99.1 CNC League coaches luncheon. “We didn’t have a lot of lows and highs. Our kids are committed. They’re starting to understand commitment. They like the weight room.” The Trojans enter with some expectations as they were picked by the coaches to finish second in the CNC. Girard returns running backs Anthony Scholes (6-0, 180, Sr.) and Nick George (5-10, 175, Sr.), as well as offensive linemen Jalen Merrell (6-0, 215, Sr.), Logan Franklin (6-0, 180, Sr.), Kevin Rowe (6-0, 175, Jr.) and Devin Vail (5-10, 210, Jr.). Scholes earned All-State honorable mention last season. Braden Johnson (5-9, 155) is expected to start at quarterback. Defensively, the Trojans return Nick George, Nate George (5-10, 175) and Tyler Gray (6-1, 170, Sr.) as linebackers, and Merrell, Franklin, Rowe and Vail to the defensive line. Girard opens the season Aug. 31 at home against Caney Valley. The Trojans will get to play four of their first five games at home. “If you go out to the stadium, it’s the same old stadium but we’ve got a new coat of paint on everything and the goal posts are a nice gold,” Miller said. “Everything is looking real good. The kids are seeing this and saying, ‘this looks good. Sure, the Panthers have had one of the state’s most successful programs in the past 15 years by advancing to the Class 2-1A state championship nine times and winning four of them. However, Smith returns a squad with little starting experience, and the Panthers will be moving up to Class 3A for the first time in the school’s history. “We have one starter back on offense, and he was hurt all summer,” Smith said during the CNC coaches luncheon. “We have zero back on defense. I’m kind of surprised we’re picked so high.” Colgan graduated 20 seniors from last year’s 11-1 team that advanced to the state semifinals. Among those 20 graduated seniors are All-State running backs and linebackers Zach and Christian Smith and All-State kicker Austin Barone. The Smith brothers signed on to continue their football careers at Princeton. The Panthers return only one full-time starter in offensive tackle Tyler Commons (6-2, 195, Sr.) and three part-time starters in slotback Nate Grimaldi, fullback V.J. Piccini and offensive guard David Misasi. “Our defense will have to play really well,” Smith said. “I was looking back at some of the scores from one of the old Colgan state championship teams in the 1970s, and there were a lot of 7-6 and 13-12 games. The Dragons were predicted to win the league again in the 2012 ESPN 99.1 SEK Coaches Poll. Coming off a 6-3 season in 2011, Pittsburg returns five starters on each side of the ball. “The goals for this year are the same as last year,” Pittsburg head coach Tom Nickelson said. “To improve every day at practice and to give nothing but our absolute best effort on every repetition, every drill and every play. If we are able to do that, everything else will take care of itself.” However, the Dragons will have some adjustments to make. Spencer Bernhardt, who started last season at wide receiver, is projected as the team’s quarterback. Senior Anthony McNeely returns at fullback, while seniors Skylar McGuire (6-2, 225), Dakota Taylor (6-3, 255) and Chris Huyett (6-2, 215) provide size and experience on the offensive line. On defense, Pittsburg returns a strong corps of linebackers with seniors McNeely, Nick Vacca and Zack Woods, and sophomore Alex Barnes. Bernhardt returns at defensive back. While the Dragons hope to repeat as SEK champs, they also hope to get back to the Class 5A playoffs. Despite having good teams, Pittsburg has been blocked in recent years as it played in one of the most competitive districts in the state. Things should get a little easier for the Dragons in 2012, however. Gardner-Edgerton moved to 6A, and St. Thomas Aquinas is in a new district. However, Pitt State head coach Tim Beck knows that last season and preseason predictions won’t help the Gorillas reach their goals in 2012. “We really don’t put any stock into it all,” Beck said. “It’s an honor to be picked No. 1, but the bottom line is we saw what happened last year – the team that was picked fifth ended up winning it all. It’s not a big deal. It’s something for people to talk about, but it has absolutely no impact on the season.” More importantly, the Gorillas return six players on each side of the ball who started at least five games during last year’s 13-1 championship season. Pitt State’s defense was led by one of the best linebackers in the country in Nate Dreiling (6-4, 229). The Hutchinson High School product enters his junior season as a two-time All-American. He recorded 139 tackles, three sacks and seven interceptions as a sophomore. Senior defensive end Gus Toca (6-3, 250) also earned All-America recognition with 57 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and 11 sacks last season. The Pitt State secondary will be led by safeties Chas Smith and Jason Peete and cornerback Aries Herrion. Smith (5-9, 186) earned All-MIAA honors last year with 30 tackles and four interceptions in only six games. Peete (6-3, 190) had 55 tackles and three interceptions, while Herrion (5-10, 172) recorded 44 tackles and six pass breakups. Offensively, Pitt State will have a big void after the graduation of quarterback Zac Dickey. However, Beck said he believes Anthony Abenoja is up to the challenge of taking over under center. “Anthony has waited his turn and now is ready to lead our football team,” Beck said. “Anthony had a tremendous spring. He works hard, spends a great deal of time in film study. We feel good about how he will handle our offense.” Abenoja’s job will be made easier by having one of the most exciting receiver in Division II at his disposal in John Brown (5-11, 171). Brown caught 61 balls for 1,216 yards and 12 TDs last season. He also had three rushing touchdowns and three on punt and kick returns. Q- With Kansas City rolling out the red carpet and showing tremendous support for the recent MLB All-Star game, it got me excited, and eager to see a winning product again in KC. So what exactly do the Royals need to do to become a contender?

A- It seems as if the Kansas City Royals used the “Our Time” slogan at least a year or two early. The Royals have built a strong nucleus of talent through the draft and trades, but it appears they need more help in order to make their first postseason appearance since 1985. Kansas City needs a huge upgrade in the starting pitching rotation and one more power bats in the lineup. The starting rotation is the biggest concern. Left-hander Bruce Chen is a useful veteran who is under contract through 2013, but he is no ace. Chen is better suited as the No. 4 or No. 5 man in the rotation. Luke Hochevar, the No. 1 overall pick in 2006, has displayed flashes but has never lived up to expectations. Hochevar’s performance in the second half of the season should determine how the Royals proceed with the 28-year-old righty. If he pitches well, Hochevar should have the opportunity to earn a spot in the back end of the 2013 rotation. If Hochevar continues to slide, it may be time to cut ties. Left-hander Jonathan Sanchez will no longer be with the team next season, and his departure will be welcomed by Royals fans. The former World Series winner with the San Francisco Giants was acquired in the offseason for outfielder Melky Cabrera. While Sanchez has had the worst season of his career, Cabrera was named MVP of the All-Star Game. Luis Mendoza, Everett Teaford, Vin Mazzaro and Nate Adcock are better suited as long relievers or Triple-A starters. Lefty Danny Duffy and right-hander Felipe Paulino were the Royals’ most successful starters in 2012, before both went down with elbow injuries. It will be at least a year before each pitcher recovers from Tommy John surgery. Minor league pitchers Jake Odorizzi, Will Smith and Ryan Verdugo will have the opportunity to win a spot in the 2013 rotation out of spring training. However, Kansas City needs to bring in a veteran or two to lead the staff. Acquiring those pitchers can come either through free agency or by trading away some of the Royals’ many prospects. Either way, a front-of-the-rotation starter is a must. Cole Hamels, Zack Greinke, James Shields, Shaun Marcum, Jake Peavy, Anibal Sanchez, Ryan Dempster and Ervin Santana are among the top free agent pitchers going into next season. There is little to no chance for Hamels to sign with Kansas City as he will command a contract in excess of $100 million. The Royals’ wish list should target Greinke and Marcum at the top. Greinke, who won a Cy Young with Kansas City in 2009, will have a lot of suitors, but he could give the Royals a hometown discount if he believes in the team’s ability to contend. Marcum, who helped Milwaukee reach the NLCS in 2011, is from Excelsior Springs, Mo., and would be an upgrade to anyone on the current staff. In addition to a frontend starter, Kansas City should go after a reclamation project like Santana. The former All-Star could be acquired at a discount. If he can recapture his past success, the Royals will have hit the jackpot. If not, they can give one of their young pitchers an opportunity. If the acquisitions work, Duffy returns at full strength and Odorizzi pans out, the Royals could have a strong rotation heading into 2014. Kansas City also needs another power bat to give the lineup a boost. The good news is the player already is in the Royals’ system. By mid-July, outfielder Wil Myers led the minor leagues with 28 home runs. Myers should be playing in Kansas City before this season is over and is likely to be an opening-day starter in 2013. With Myers, designated hitter Billy Butler, third baseman Mike Moustakas and first baseman Eric Hosmer, the Royals will have four players with 30-home run potential. That’s significant since a Royals player hasn’t hit 30 home runs since Jermaine Dye knocked out 33 in 2000. If the Royals follow this plan, they could make a run in 2013 and have a real shot in 2014.

The SE Kansas Q&A Times Journal recently had a chance to visit with Kylar Terlip of Frontenac KS, winner of one of the most prestigious titles in barrel racing, the Josey Jr. World Championship. The 12-year-old reigning WPRA Junior World Champion took time to share her experience, and her inspiration, with our readers.

QAT: When did you develop an interest in horses and then begin riding competitively? KT: My family has always had an interest in horses, so they have always been a part of my life. My father got me a horse when I was very young and I was five when I started to compete. It just seemed like a natural progression. QAT: Tell us about your horse, Fire Powered Jet. I understand he is older than most horses typically in barrel racing. KT: Yes, Jet is an 18-year old Palomino quarter horse, the son of Fire Water Flit. He is older than most horses out there competing, but you would never know that. We have a special bond and read each other very well. QAT: I understand he had some problems that prevented you from competing part of the year? KT: Yes, he developed some hoof problems so we gave him the time he needed to recover. Even with that time away, he performed well in competition and I was really happy with him. QAT: What kind of effort does it take compete at this level? KT: Lots of practice. I spend more time at this than I would care to calculate, but it is worth it all. It also takes having lots of people helping and supporting you. I have my mom, Karin Nielsen, my dad, Kaleb Terlip and my grandparents all working nearly full time to help make it all happen. I am very thankful for them. QAT: What would you tell someone considering beginning barrel racing? KT: Well, a couple of things. First, find out how much money it costs. It is expensive and you will need to be able to care for the horse properly. Second, I would get someone to help who is in barrel racing. I would also want them to know that it is worth the work. QAT: What inspires you most and keeps you competing? KT: I love the challenge of trying to do your best at every event. It is also fun to get together with friends, whether you do well or not. QAT: What would you tell others as they pursue their dreams? KT: Keep going. Keep working. Keep believing you can get better and go further. Your dreams are worth your effort.

Q: What are some of the events surrounding the MLB All-Star Game on July 10 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., and what are the chances of getting a ticket?

A: If you are determined to attend the All-Star Game on July 10th at Kauffman Stadium and don’t already have tickets, you will need to be willing to open your wallet. As of mid-June, the least expensive ticket for the Midsummer Classic available on Stubhub.com was $285 for standing-room only. If you want a seat, an upper deck ticket could be purchased for $330. The closer you want to get to the action, the more expensive it will be. A single dugout box ticket around home plate exceeds $2,200. However, you don’t have to empty your child’s college fund in order for you and your family to take in some of the All-Star weekend’s festivities. If you’re wanting to take the kids, the All-Star FanFest maybe your best bet. The FanFest, which will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, July 6th through Monday, July 9th and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 10 at the Kansas City Convention Center, touts itself as the largest interactive baseball theme park in the world. Tickets for each day are affordable with the base rate at $30 for adults, $25 for children 2-12, and free for kids under the age of 2. There also are plenty of ticket packages available through allstargame.com, such as a five pack for two adults and three children at the price of $110. There also are packages available for people who would like to attend the FanFest all five days. The best part is that once you’re in FanFest, all of the attractions are free. Q: How would you grade the 2012 draft class of the Kansas City Chiefs?

A: The Kansas City Chiefs had eight selections in the 2012 NFL Draft, but the final grade will ultimately depend on the development of first-round pick Dontari Poe. Poe, a nose tackle out of Memphis who the Chiefs made the No. 11 overall pick, is a gamble. He is a classic Al Davis/Oakland Raiders-type pick as he wows onlookers in the gym with his impressive size, strength and speed numbers but has failed to translate those abilities on the field. He is an imposing figure at nearly 6-4 and 350 pounds. Poe’s scouting combine numbers were among the best for defensive tackles as he led the group with 44 repetitions on the bench press. He also posted a sub-five-second 40-yard dash time despite his bulky build. However, Poe’s results on the field are what create some concerns. Despite playing in a relatively weak Conference USA, Poe was only second-team all-conference with 33 tackles. While the production wasn’t terrible, he didn’t dominate in the way you would expect from the No. 11 pick overall. Scouts say Poe tends to stand up after initial contact and often struggles with blockers who are smaller and weaker. It will be up to Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel and the rest of the Chiefs’ staff to harness Poe’s talent. Crennel is credited with helping develop Pro Bowl defensive linemen Vince Wilfork and Shaun Rogers when he was at New England and Cleveland. Crennel’s tenure will be judged by wins and losses, but he also will be evaluated for his ability to develop Poe into a star. There’s no doubt it will be a difficult challenge, but Crennel is probably more prepared to accomplish the task than any other coach. The Chiefs selected offensive linemen Jeff Allen and Donald Stephenson in the second and third rounds, respectively. Allen, a tackle from Illinois, is projected to get a chance at guard for the Chiefs. He is lauded for his football intelligence and versatility. However, Allen’s toughness and fitness have been questioned. Stephenson, a tackle from Oklahoma, could be a long-term project at left tackle. He finished his prep career at Blue Springs High School and grew up a Chiefs fan. Stephenson is athletic, but he needs to improve his technique and be more physical. In the fourth round, the Chiefs selected Fresno State wide receiver Devon Wylie. The 5-9, 187-pound receiver has been compared to Wes Welker and is projected to help out on special teams. Wylie will need to improve his route running and work on not being out muscled for the ball. The Chiefs grabbed Alabama defensive back DeQuan Menzie, Texas A&M running back Cyrus Gray, San Diego State defensive lineman Jerome Long and Michigan wide receiver Junior Hemingway in the later rounds. Menzie could provide depth in the secondary, while Gray could pan out as a third-down back with his pass-catching ability. Long and Hemingway will fight to make the roster. Chiefs draft grade: C. While Poe was a bit of a reach at No. 11, this draft could turn into an A if Poe develops and some of the picks in the later rounds become key contributors.

Q: What was the key to the success of the Pittsburg State women’s basketball team this season?

A: The Pittsburg State women’s basketball team had a remarkable season indeed. Pitt State advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time since 1998 and advanced to the Elite Eight in San Antonio. There, the Gorillas fell 61-58 to Shaw (N.C.), the eventual national champion. The 2011-12 Gorillas broke more than 20 school records, including most wins in a season (27), fewest losses (6), longest win streak (14), most rebounds and most blocked shots. “It was a record-setting year,” said Pitt State coach Lane Lord, who earned MIAA and regional coach of the year honors. “We had the most wins in a season, and we broke that by five. We started the season 14-0. I could just go on and on.” In one season, the Gorillas elevated themselves from an upper-half team in the MIAA to one of the best in the nation. Pitt State finished second in the MIAA, won the program’s first NCAA Tournament game, earned the South Central Regional title and advanced to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history. Lord said the success started with his senior class of Britnee Foster, Courtney Tate, Amanda Orloske, Brooke Conley and Larissa Richards. Conley (12.5) and Richards (11.1) each averaged double figures in points, while Tate, Foster and Orloske provided a strong work ethic and valuable minutes. “Our five seniors were great role players,” Lord said. “They brought unselfish play and leadership. I think this senior class left their legacy for most wins but also because of their character.” The strong character of the seniors allowed standout freshman forward Lizzy Jeronimus to flourish. The Shawnee Mission West product helped take the Gorillas to a new level by leading the team in points (15.8 ppg) and assists (95), while being second in rebounds (6.8 rpg). She earned honorable mention All-America honors. In order to compete for a Division II national championship, you must have Division I quality players. Pitt State’s football team won a national title with the likes of Nate Dreiling and John Brown, who could compete at the D-I level. Jeronimus made the same type of impact for the Gorilla women. “We had good players in our program, but we really needed a program changer,” Lord said. “When I recruited her I thought she could play in the Big 12 or anywhere in the country.” The great thing for the Gorillas is that they will have Jeronimus for three more seasons. “I think her best basketball is ahead of her,” Lord said. “As she matures physically, she’s going to get even better. When you have one of your best players who is one of your hardest workers and is a leader, that’s a recipe for success. She’s a 4.0 student and her work ethic is unbelievable.” Along with Jeronimus, the Gorillas will return a nucleus of players that includes Drew Roberts, Alexa Bordewick, Morgan Westhoff, Lauren Brown and Y’Cedria Devers. “Our expectations are very high,” Lord said. “I think we can compete at the highest level.”

Q: The Pittsburg State Gorillas football had a losing record two years ago and finished just at .500 last year. How did they make such a rapid turnaround in order to win the 2011 NCAA Division II national championship?

A: The resurgence of the Pittsburg State football program has been remarkable indeed. However, the reason for the turnaround can’t be attributed to one person or one team strength. No, it’s not that simple. In order for Pitt State to capture its first national title since 1991 with a 35-21 win against Wayne State, numerous coaches, players and pieces had to fall into place. But if you are going to make a list of factors that led to the Gorillas’ resurgence, then that list must start with Pitt State head coach Tim Beck. Before taking the role of head coach in 2010, Beck was an assistant coach for the Gorillas for 23 seasons. He had offers to coach other places during that time, but instead he stayed at his alma mater on the staff of legendary coach Chuck Broyles. Beck had the unique fortune of serving as defensive coordinator and offensive coordinator for the Gorillas before taking the role of head coach. Those experiences could do nothing but help him in his new position. Beck’s leadership and knowledge, combined with the enthusiasm of a second-year head coach, set the Gorillas on the right path. His hire of Steve Rampy as offensive coordinator also was integral. The rest of the coaches are a mix of veterans and former players to make one of the better staffs in all of Division II. However, the resurgence didn’t begin and end with the coaches. As any good coach knows, a championship can’t be won without talented and driven players. The Gorillas had plenty of both. You can’t talk about the Pitt State defense without mentioning linebacker Nate Dreiling. After his sophomore season, the Hutchinson High School product is already a two-time All-American. Dreiling finished the season with 139 tackles, 47 tackles for loss, three sacks and seven interceptions. Only a sophomore, Dreiling exudes the confidence and leadership of a longtime player. The exciting thing for Gorillas fans is that they will get to watch him play for two more seasons. Dreiling, however, will be the first to mention that the success of this championship defense includes many names beyond himself. Luke Stringer, Gus Toca, Paul Robinson, Jason Peete, Spencer Worthington and Aries Herrion make just a short list of the players who took this defense to the next level this season. The offense was fueled by senior quarterback Zac Dickey. What makes the hometown product special is that his leadership abilities may even outweigh his great athletic talent. In his first season as the unquestioned starter, Dickey took the role of quarterback and leader extremely seriously. He worked to gain knowledge of Rampy’s offensive system and finished with a stellar year. Dickey completed 60 percent of his passes on the season for 2,290 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also led the team in rushing with 1,165 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. The quarterback was surrounded by a strong offensive line, quality running backs and a stellar corps of wide receivers. And when you talk about the receivers, you must start with John Brown. The wideout and special teams star, who plays much bigger than his 5-11. 170-pound build, led the team with 61 catches for 1,216 yards and 12 TDs. He also returned two punts and one kickoff for touchdowns. Brown was as electric as any player in all of Division II this season and often the difference maker for the Gorillas. But the list doesn’t end there. This championship team was built on the blood and sweat of more coaches and players than I can mention in this article. However, I would be wrong if I left out the fans. There’s no doubt that this fan base played a huge role in Pitt State’s championship season. Fans were in full force during home playoff wins against Washburn, Northwest Missouri State and Delta State. And for those watching on ESPN2, there was no doubt that Gorilla fans outnumbered Wayne State’s crowd by a large margin. In all, the key point is that Pitt State is back on top of the Division II football mountain. With the likes of Beck, Dreiling and Brown leading for years to come, there’s no reason to think the Gorillas can’t remain national title contenders for the foreseeable future. Q: St. Mary’s-Colgan’s football coach Chuck Smith recently earned his 300th career win. What is the significance?

A: The St. Mary’s-Colgan Panthers’ recent win against Lyndon earned coach Chuck Smith his 300th career victory as head coach of a Kansas high school football team. The victory makes Smith only the sixth coach in state history to achieve the milestone, joining Silver Lake’s C.J. Hamilton, Clifton-Clyde’s Ed Buller, McPherson’s Tom Young, Sedan’s Les Davis and Smith Center’s Roger Barta. Hamilton, Young, Barta and Smith all are active coaches. Smith had a 300-63 record at the time of the milestone win. Only Barta needed fewer games to reach 300 wins. The Smith Center coach boasted a 300-58 record when he captured the milestone in 2009. Nationwide, an Oct. 27 story on ESPN.com listed Summerville, S.C., coach John McKissick (1952-present) as the winningest high school football coach of all-time with 592 victories at the time of the article. The story listed the top 20, starting with McKissick at 592 and ending with Calallen-Corpus Christi, Texas coach Phil Danaher at 374 wins. It’s difficult to know for sure, but from this list and other lists from various news outlets it should be safe to assume Smith’s milestone puts him somewhere between the top 100 to 200 coaches nationwide. Smith remains humble about the accomplishment. “It’s a neat milestone,” Smith said. “It puts me with some neat people. But I think about the coaches that work just as hard or maybe even harder that don’t have that success. So my thank you goes out to all of the coaches in the state of Kansas who work with kids whether they win or not, because they’re making America better. I really believe that.” Smith grew up in Atchison, and then played football collegiately at Pittsburg State University. His first head coaching job came in 1979 at Topeka Hayden. Smith directed the Wildcats to a 3-6 record that season. He hasn’t had that many losses in a season since. Smith married a Colgan graduate, Beth (Wachter) Smith, and took over the Panthers football program in 1980 from Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame coach Frank Crespino. At Colgan, Smith built a family literally and figuratively. Chuck and Beth raised seven children (Lori, Christy, Nick, Sarah, Mark, Jeff and Chas). Those seven children resulted in four quarterbacks and three cheerleaders. All four sons played in the Kansas Shrine Bowl and all four went on to play at Pittsburg State. Smith’s extended family at Colgan also has been important. Defensive coordinator Wayne Cichon has been with Smith for 29 of his 32 years at Colgan. “I owe a special thanks to Coach Cichon,” Smith said. “I just turn the defense over to him, and he does a great job with it every year.” The extended family also includes numerous other assistant coaches over the years, loads of All-State players and even more players who just knew their role. With that family, Smith entered the 2011 season with five state championships (1984, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003) and 11 state championship appearances. Those accolades include four consecutive state championships and 66 consecutive wins, which was a state record at the time. Q: How will the recent changes in classifications impact area high school sports teams?

A: The Kansas High School Activities Association recently released new classifications in football for the 2012 and 2013 seasons and in all of the other sports for the 2011-12 school year. In football, which is based on enrollment of the freshman, sophomore and junior classes, several area teams were affected. The largest 32 schools play in Class 6A, the next 32 play in 5A, the next 64 play in 4A and the next 64 play in 3A. Up to the next 64 schools can compete in 2-1A, but the schools with an enrollment of fewer than 100 students can choose to compete in 8-Man Division I. The state’s smallest schools play in 8-Man Division II. The Frontenac Raiders, which have been a 3A school for more than a decade, moves to 4A for the 2012 and 2013 football seasons. With an enrollment number of 199, Frontenac will be the second smallest school in 4A. Frontenac previously had been among the largest 3A schools. This is a particularly difficult jump for the Raiders as 4A has the widest school range of any of the classifications. For instance, 4A’s largest school is Maize South with an enrollment number of 564 and the smallest is Goodland with 197 students. That means the 4A’s biggest schools are more than two-and-a-half times as large as Frontenac. It is the only classification where the gap is even double. However, Frontenac will be in one of the classification’s smaller districts with the likes of Independence (425), Parsons (285), and Girard (264). With two teams making the playoffs out of each district, those odds are in no way insurmountable. The St. Mary’s Colgan Panthers will make the jump to 3A after being a perennial contender in 2-1A for decades. With an enrollment number of 120, Colgan will be the smallest school in 3A. The largest school will be Burlington with an enrollment number of 195. The good news for Colgan is that this means it should be able to compete in the Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League again. The past two seasons, the Panthers have had to play five 2-1A district games. Since none of those teams are in the CNC, they have been unable to play more than four league games and have been ineligible for the conference title and individual league honors. For the 2012 and 2013 seasons, Colgan will compete in a district with three other CNC teams in Southeast (193), Riverton (189) and Galena (166). That means Colgan will be able to play the league requirement of five games. Colgan also will play new opponents like Columbus, the CNC’s newest member, and Anderson County. The Northeast Vikings drop back to 2-1A after playing the past two seasons in 3A. With an enrollment number of 116, Northeast will be 2-1A’s second largest school. The Vikings have bounced back and forth between the two classes in recent years but have struggled to compete on both levels. The lack of Colgan in its district should help. Northeast will now be paired with Lyndon (115), Jayhawk-Linn (114), Oswego (107) and Olpe (72). Several area schools also are changing classifications for the 2011-12 school year in all of the other sports, which are based on enrollment for the entire high school. The Pittsburg Purple Dragons drop from 5A to 4A with 717 students. Pittsburg will be 4A’s largest school, while Haven will be the classification’s smallest school with 258 students. The Dragons will remain in 5A for football. While Frontenac moves to 4A in football, the Raiders will remain in 3A for all of the other sports. However, Colgan will move up to 3A in all sports. The Panthers will be one of the smallest schools in 3A with 166 students. Typically a baseball and basketball powerhouse, Colgan could have extra competition statewide with the likes of Silver Lake in baseball and Scott City in basketball. Q: Columbus and Iola high schools are planning on leaving the Southeast Kansas League. What does that mean for area athletics?

A: Conferences are in flux. Traditions are taking a backseat as individual schools are moving to athletic leagues they feel fit them best. While this best applies to the current cluster in college athletics, the Big 12, conference realignment is also occurring in local high school athletics. Iola is set to leave the SEK for the Pioneer League before the 2012-13 school year, and now it appears Columbus will depart the SEK for the Crawford-Neosho-Cherokee League in 2012-13. This means the SEK will have seven member schools remaining with Pittsburg, Fort Scott, Independence, Chanute, Coffeyville, Labette County and Parsons. Conference realignment for colleges mainly deals with the almighty dollar and football. The reason for high schools leaving their leagues isn’t quite as simple. For Columbus, which should find out in the next month whether the CNC school principals approve its application, the move has more to do with trying to reduce travel costs and putting the kids in a more favorable position competitively. “Our board has been looking at it the past year,” Columbus athletic director Todd Napier said. “They looked at travel costs and the potential savings. And they looked at the potential advantage there would be competitively in some of the sports.” Fewer 50-mile drives to Coffeyville and more 14-mile drives to Cherokee definitely play a role. The move also means that instead of being the smallest school in the SEK, Columbus will be the CNC’s largest. However, even those factors aren’t cut and dry. While Columbus should save some money in travel costs by competing in a league with schools of closer proximity, they will still play many of those SEK schools in sports with large schedules like basketball, volleyball and wrestling. The savings is reduced more when you factor in that Columbus will likely have to charge less at the gate for CNC contests to stay consistent with the league. Competitively, coaches for the individual sports were split on the decision. Some coaches feel playing in the larger SEK prepared the teams for district and regional competition, while others said playing in the CNC will give the teams more confidence as they are likely to have improved regular season records. Moving to the CNC also means that the Titans won’t be able to compete for a league championship in wrestling, soccer and boys and girls tennis because the other conference schools don’t have those programs. In the end, the board members decided there were more pros in switching to the CNC. The result could mean another hiatus in the traditional Coal Bucket football game between Pittsburg and Columbus. However, it could start a new rivalry between the Titans and the St. Mary’s Colgan Panthers if the two schools can work out the scheduling kinks. The open spots in the schedule also could mean a return of the likes of Webb City, Mo., and Joplin, Mo., on Pittsburg High’s football schedule. Bottom line, unlike in the Big 12, the fans don’t lose in this decision. Games will remain competitive, and some new rivalries could be kindled.

Question: Do you have any history of the ice hockey’s original days in Wichita?

ANSWER:   Ahhh.. the memories... such sweet memories... and to think, Ice hockey in Wichita has only gotten better since.The first ice hockey game was played in Wichita on November 28, 1932, between the Wichita Alaskan Club and Kansas City, with Wichita winning by a score of 5 to 4.  The first professional game was played the following season between the Wichita Blue Jays and St. Louis with Wichita winning by 4 to 2. The Semi-Pro Industrial Hockey League was prominent in Wichita between 1941 and 1954. After the war and the return of many players from the armed forces, the ice hockey semi-pro program was re-activated in 1946 at the Alaskan Ice Palace.The games were held on Sunday nights, November through March. There were hundreds of loyal fans with an entertainment atmosphere prevailing. The Beech band played for every game, prizes were given for lucky number programs, and between periods, featured figure skating exhibitions by professional and semi-professional skaters kept all eyes on the ice.The teams were composed mostly of local players who had been skating at the Alaskan Ice Palace since they were youngsters, although some players were brought in from Colorado College, Boston, and Chicago. The "All Star" team played against Tulsa, Dallas, Colorado College, and the University of South Dakota.The last of these hockey games was played in 1954 because the Alaskan Ice Palace was converted to a roller skating rink at that time. The Blair House apartments on South Hydraulic now stand on the location of the old Alaskan Ice Palace.Wichita Ice Hockey was re-activated in 1967 by Cliff Wade, ex-semi-pro player. The new organization, Ice Hockey Booster Club, was made up of ex-players and fans wanting to support ice hockey both professionally and on an amateur basis. The business group promoting the acquisition of a professional team in Wichita was unsuccessful. The club turned to promoting amateur hockey for both adults and youth. Bill Naill and Cliff Wade worked to get the adult hockey started, and Bob Coslett worked to organize the youth hockey program. Joyce Mercer served faithfully in the capacities of secretary and treasurer helping to organize the new youth hockey group. Local names playing on the re-organized team included Bill Naill, Cliff Wade, Bill Barbour, Jim and Bill Richardson, Bob Coslett, Allen Buzzi, Fred Hunt, and Ernie Smith. The youth group started with three boys, Gary Wade, Alvin Coslett, and David Fralie. Gary is the only remaining player today, in 1973. The youth group built up to 65 to 75 players in 1971, and held that many 2 years later.  In 1974, Wichita, Youth Hockey, Inc. was fully affiliated with the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States, and was funded by dues from players, uniform subscriptions underwritten by local businesses, and by subsidies received from the sale of advertisement in the program. Each Christmas, players sold English holly to help in the costs of the program. Bill Naill sponsored and coached, along with Cliff Wade the Wichita Jets, a 6 to 10 year old team. Wayne Mercer coached the Wichita Bombers, aged 11 to 14. Bill Coons coached the Wichita Hawks, aged 15 to 19. Beginners were coached by Rocksey Powell and Sharon Farmer. The Wichita Flyers, Men's Team, was sponsored by NJ's Datsun, and was coached by Leonard Furnas and John Simo.

: How did the Sport, Boat & Travel Show originate?

ANSWER:  The Sports Show first opened in the mid-1950s at the Wichita Forum Building. For these five decades, several generations of families have come seeking all kinds of outdoor fun.  In 2004, the show focuses on opening up this family adventure to new generations. Features for families will include a special appearance by President Theodore Roosevelt, avid sportsman and conservationist and one of the greatest American presidents.  Keith McGough, the creator of “Theodore Roosevelt Today”, is a lifetime admirer of the not-often-found ideals of America's hero from 100 years ago. McGough ended his business career at age 50 to professionally portray President Theodore Roosevelt as a national professional speaker. He has appeared before national and state associations, Fortune 500 companies and classrooms across the country.Other activities for families include the Make-A-Wish Foundation's Trout Fishing Pond where kids can catch their first trout of the season and the Department of Wildlife's Electronic Target Shooting System.  Water fun seekers will find great deals on new fishing and ski boats. Campers and RV travelers who prefer the freedom of RV travel will find the latest models and special value pricing.  Catfish pro Dennis Halgren from Illinois, is set to talk to show visitors about his secrets for championship fishing and Phillip Hain demonstrates casting techniques and the correct use of new bait products on his Travelin' Fish Tank, a 40' long glass aquarium.  Additionally, there will be giant exhibits of boats, RVs, vacation ideas, travel packages, motorcycles, personal watercraft, fishing tackle and supplies; hunting accessories, hunting and fishing pros, waterfowl and turkey calling seminars, snake and reptile education and more. The 50th should prove to be quite a celebration!

: Hockey never ceases to amaze me. It seems like it would be hard enough to get a heavy flat rubber puck into a net if you were on dry land... but on ice skates too? When and where did this game originate?

ANSWER:  My research shows that hockey's origins have been claimed by many communities. Windsor Nova Scotia, Montreal, Quebec and Kingston, Ontario.  But it was Deline, North West Territories where the first documented reference to the game occurred.  Sir John Franklin, the explorer who discovered and traveled throughout Northern and Arctic Canada, recorded in his diary a first ever reference to the game of hockey. While wintering at the fort at Deline NWT, on Great Bear Lake, Franklin's men played a game of hockey where they strapped on skates and Franklin documented this in a diary entry.  Toronto history buff Joseph Nieforth unearthed a letter written by Franklin in November 1825, which says:  "Till the snow fell the game of hockey played on the ice was the morning's sport."   Franklin's personal journal, published in 1998 by the Champlain Society contained the following entry by Franklin in October 1825:"Friday 20th... We were visited by the first decided snow storm which continued without intermission 36 hours. Though this change put a period to the amusements of skating and the evening games on the ice we could not but rejoice, as there was now sufficient snow on the ground for the putting in practice the winter modes of traveling."   Martin Jones, a lawyer from Dartmouth, NS has published "Hockey's Home: Halifax-Dartmouth - The Origins of Canada's Game". He claims that the game was first played on Lake Banook in Dartmouth in the early 1800's.Thomas Chandler Haliburton, a judge and writer (19th century Sam Slick) in Windsor, Nova Scotia penned a reference in his writings. Haliburton wrote in 1844 about his childhood memories and he spoke of his time at King's College shortly after the turn of the century and of boys "(playing) hurley on the Long Pond on the ice." The long pond reference is apparently that of a pond on Howard Dill's pumpkin farm in Windsor, 60 km northwest of Dartmouth.A game played in Kingston in 1855 between teams from the Royal Canadian Rifles, stationed in the British Garrison there, is claimed to be the first organized hockey game played in Canada. The game was played on the harbor ice and had as many as fifty men to a side and is still debated as to whether it was a "hockey game" or not.James Creighton, born in Halifax in 1850 had relocated to Montreal in 1870, and introduced the game there. On March 3rd, 1875, Creighton and friends played the first game of organized hockey inside a rink. Creighton's game featured nine skaters a side and followed "Halifax Rules" written by Creighton himself. The introduction of hockey in Montreal was successful and the game grew quickly.Four years later W.F. Robertson, a student at McGill University in Montreal decided to adapt the sport of field hockey to ice hoping to keep the McGill football club in shape during the winter. This game had fifteen men a side, and used a lacrosse ball with the edges cut off as the puck. This reduced the damage caused by the lacrosse ball wildly bouncing out of control.From the games played in the early 1800's in Windsor Nova Scotia, hockey spread to Quebec by 1875, then into Kingston, Ontario in 1886, and south to Toronto in 1888. By 1890, the game had arrived in Winnipeg and then to Victoria, British Columbia becoming a truly Canadian game.More next month...

:  What are some tips on buying gem stones or beads for a ring, watch or other jewelry?

ANSWER: Generally, the price of any gemstone is determined by: size, cut, quality (color/clarity/treatments), and type. Some questions to ask about quality are:   Has it been treated? (see below)    Is the stone natural or synthetic?    Are there any noticeable scratches, chips or     inclusions?    Is the color even throughout the stone?    How good is the color? Is it vivid?    If you are buying the stones for earrings or    cufflinks, are the stones well matched?    There are many ways that dealers treat gemstones. The savvy buyer asks lots of questions and hopefully tests the results. Here are some treatments to look for:   Irradiation: It is common to irradiate aquamarine, London blue topaz, emerald, and diamond as well as other stones. This treatment brings out color and removes imperfections. Many dealers know if the stones they are selling have been irradiated. Honest ones will tell you if they are aware of the treatment.    Heat Treatment: Amethyst, aquamarine, ruby, tanzanite and topaz are often heated at high temperatures to enhance color.    Dye: This is the most common treatment used. On clear stones, dye may be visible in cracks that are darker than the rest of the stone. Sometimes dye appears as a residue that rubs off or white patches. Lapis, rose quartz, amethyst and citrine are often dyed. Black onyx is permanently dyed in normal processing.    Coatings: Jasper is often dipped in petroleum products to bring out color and to seal it. Emerald is oiled; turquoise is waxed.    Fake Stones: Some dealers will try passing off fake stones instead of natural ones. There are fake stones for most gemstones on the market. Always ask what stone something is if you are not certain. Honest dealers will tell you. If a stone looks too perfect it may be fake, irradiated or dyed. Avoid Laboratory-made products also known as synthetics.
