Q- Why is my dog gaining weight, tiring easily, and has a poor haircoat??

A- These symptoms can all be attributed to a poorly functioning thyroid gland. This disorder would be called Hypothyroidism meaning low thyroid hormone. This can affect nearly all body systems causing a slowdown of the tissue metabolism. This is probably the most common hormonal disease in the dog. Any breed can be affected but it is most common in the larger breeds. A deficiency of thyroid hormone affects the metabolic function of many organ systems. Clinical signs may vary but symptoms your veterinarian may consider include: • lethargy, increased sleeping • depression • exercise intolerance (tires easily) • weight gain • cold intolerance - low body temperature • chronic skin disorders-excessive hair loss, thinning of the hair coat Hypothyroidism is not always a simple disease to diagnose. However tests are available that will aid your veterinarian in making this diagnosis. Fortunately, hypothyroidism is easily treated and involves administration of twice daily doses of synthetic hormone. Once treatment is started, it must be continued for the rest of the dog's life. The improvement in your dogs well-being will more than justify any inconvenience and the symptoms usually resolve fairly quickly. See your veterinarian for any questions. Q: I am wondering if rabies is as common as it once was. Is it still really necessary to get animals vaccinated?

A: Yes, it is still common, and still very necessary to get your animals vaccinated. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment wants to remind the public to have their animals vaccinated by a veterinarian for rabies. According to their studies, 13 animals have tested positive since the first of the year. These consisted of 4 skunks, two bats, two cows, two horses, one cat, one coyote and one raccoon. This number is significantly higher then last year at this time. Vaccines are available for dogs, cats, ferrets, horses, cattle and sheep. Most people understand the importance of vaccinating dogs and cats against rabies, but they often forget about or don’t realize the importance of vaccinating horses. Vaccinating cattle and sheep is not practical but KDHE encouraged the public to vaccinate valuable breeding stock and show animals. Animals do need to have periodic boosters of vaccine to maintain proper protection. Animal rabies is common in Kansas, and skunks are the animals most likely to have the disease. However, skunks can pass the virus to other animals, such as dogs, cats, cattle and horses. The risk for human exposure to rabies is real but preventable and depends on the vaccination of domestic animals, eliminating exposure to stray and wild animals and providing exposed persons with prompt post-exposure rabies treatment. Tips that the Health Department recommends are to have your veterinarian vaccinate all dogs, cats, ferrets, horses and valuable breeding stock against rabies. They insist on the importance of reporting all animal bites and seeking medical attention, teaching children to never handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, and to never adopt or feed wild animals.

Q: I have a dog that is active (hunting dog) and he began having seizures a couple years ago. It generally happens when he has been running for long periods of time or, on occasion, when he gets really excited. Two questions: 1.) Is there any remedy or medication to help prevent seizures? 2.) What do we do when he is having a seizure?

A: Hypoglycemia in dogs is a sudden drop in glucose levels generally while hunting due to the extreme exertion of high amounts of energy. Symptoms of hypoglycemia in hunting dogs can be mild which include fatigue to severe leading to seizures and confusion. The dog’s body to gain energy breaks down and uses the carbohydrates and glucose stored in the body. When there is not enough glucose, hypoglycemia is the result which can then cause weakness or even seizures. Sometimes the hypoglycemia in hunting dogs is associated with dogs that are infrequently hunted and thought to be out of condition but that is not always the case as well exercised dogs will exhibit seizure activity. It is not felt that this problem is hereditary. In most cases hunting dog hypoglycemia can be controlled by feeding small meals or treats during the hunt. Examples would be peanut butter and honey sandwiches, nutritional bars, carbohydrate containing sports drinks or just plain honey. It may be also important to carbohydrate load for the two days before a hunt with additional complex carbohydrates such as brown rice and lean meats. The idea is to make glycogen (the form that the body stores sugar in) so that glucose is available in times of need. When the dog is actually having a seizure due to hypoglycemia it is much better to use simple sugars to provide the glucose he needs-corn syrup, sugar syrups like pancake syrup, honey, and fruit juices. Q: As we make our 2012 New Year’s resolutions, should we be thinking about the health, wellbeing and happiness of our pets?

A: Every year we make resolutions for ourselves but what we don’t realize is that our pets’ need some goals set for them as well. 1. Your pet’s health should be a primary goal so be sure to see your veterinarian for up-to-date vaccinations and yearly exams. February is dental health month so schedule an appointment for a dental cleaning if your pet needs it. 2. Be sure and feed your pet good quality food in appropriately designated amounts. They like routine feeding times and habits. Vow to slim down that fat dog or cat, which usually means no people food or treats from the table. Pet obesity is a growing problem that leads to many health issues, which can be potentially expensive and life threatening. 3. Take your pet to training classes or work with them at home as a well behaved pet will make your life less chaotic and the bonding time will be good for both of you. 4. Daily grooming is important as this reduces the amount of dander and hair. It will keep your pet and household more comfortable. 5. Set aside some extra time each day to play with your pet, whether it be throwing a ball, tug-of war or dangling a string throughout the house. This is a good way to give them two things they love: toys and your attention. 6. Exercise is a must for you and your pet. So be sure and get in at least one daily walk. 7. Remove all dangerous objects, hazards and chemicals from within reach of your pets. 8. Love your pet! You decided to have them in the first place and they depend upon you for their well-being. Q: What are some of the holiday hazards that I need to avoid with my pets?

A: First of all, chocolate is known to be toxic to pets but just how much is too much? Chocolate and cocoa contain theobromine, a chemical similar to caffeine that’s highly toxic to dogs and cats. The darker or more concentrated the chocolate, the more theobromine it contains. Therefore the most dangerous chocolates are baker’s chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, and gourmet dark chocolates. Dark-chocolate-covered espresso beans are especially problematic since they may contain large amounts of both theobromine and caffeine. Milk chocolate contains lower amounts of theobromine. Pets need to consume at least 1 to 2 ounces of milk chocolate per lb. of body weight before symptoms occur. The amount of chocolate in most baked goods is often relatively low and less frequently causes serious chocolate poisoning. However, GI upset-such as vomiting and diarrhea- are common following the ingestion of any chocolate product. Another holiday hazard is the ingestion of plants that are commonly found in households during the winter season. The familiar ones are poinsettias, holly and mistletoe. Though traditionally thought of as quite toxic to pets, the potential for poisoning from poinsettias is false. The milky sap of poinsettias contains irritating saponin-like(or detergent-like) properties. Exposure to the sap may cause irritation to the skin and mouth, along with vomiting and diarrhea, but it is unlikely that serious or fatal poisoning will occur. American mistletoe is less toxic than its European counterpart. Ingestion of mistletoe most commonly causes self-limiting vomiting and mild depression. Holly is also less toxic than previously thought. Ingesting holly will usually cause irritation to the GI tract from the saponins and physical damage to the stomach and intestinal tract form the spiny points of the leaves. Large ingestions of holly may also cause a bowel obstruction because the leaves are difficult to digest. Ribbon and tinsel are a third hazard during this holiday season because they are simply too tempting for cats to resist. Though they are not poisonous, when ingested they can result in bowel obstruction, intestinal perforations and peritonitis. Q: Why does my dog scratch all the time, even when we have given flea baths? Sometimes it gets so bad that he itches the fur from his skin and causes sores. Is this normal?

A: We talked about the general causes of itching, such as having an ear infection or an allergy and more specifically about itching caused by allergies. This month, we will continue conclude the answer with how to treat your dogs symptoms. After changing their food and maintaining good flea control, treating the dog’s symptoms may include; cool baths with or without colloidal oatmeal, Epsom salts, or medicated shampoos. This can be done frequently but provides only temporary relief. Caution should be used with sprays and ointments because many contain potentially harmful substances. Corticosteroids will reduce itching by reducing inflammation. Unfortunately, they also affect every organ in the body and can have side effects such as increased thirst and appetite and an increased need to urinate. Alternatives to steroid therapy should always be considered. Antihistamines can be used with relative safety in dogs. The major drawback, as with people, is sedation. Examples of antihistamines commonly used for dogs include: Tavist, Benadryl, Chlortrimeton, Atarax and Seldane. Fatty acids are natural anti-inflammatory agents. They reportedly are helpful in 20% of allergic dogs. They are certainly worth a try because they are not harmful and have virtually no side effects. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish oils (especially krill and cod) and omega-6 fatty acids are derived from plants containing gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), such as oil from the evening primrose. These supplements are different from those sold to produce a glossy coat. They tend to reduce inflammation that may lead to skin sores but are not as effective in reducing itching. Products that contain both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids include: Omega Pet, Derm Caps and EFA-Z Plus. If you know which substances your dog is allergic to avoidance is the best method of control. Allergy testing and subsequent antigen therapy is becoming more common in the treatment of severe allergies. Testing is accomplished by sending blood to a lab that will determine just what your pet’s allergies are and then form an antigen to be administrated by subcutaneous injections. This therapy is highly recommended by veterinary dermatologists. Cats have allergies too and most all of these treatments and therapies will work for their allergic symptoms.

A: Last month, we talked about the general causes of itching, such as having an ear infection or an allergy. This month, we will talk more specifically about itching caused by allergies. Both inhalant allergies and food sensitivities primarily manifest themselves with itchy skin. Other symptoms include anal itching, shaking of the head, ear inflammations, licking front paws, rubbing faces on carpeting and rarely vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, sneezing, asthma like symptoms, behavioral changes or seizures. Many people don’t suspect food allergies as the cause of their dog’s itching because their pet has been fed the same food all its life and has just recently started having symptoms. However, animals can develop allergies to a substance over time, so this fact does not rule out food allergies. Another common misconception is that dogs are only sensitive to poor quality food. If the dog is allergic to an ingredient it doesn’t matter whether it is in premium food or the most inexpensive brand on the market. One advantage to premium foods is that some avoid common fillers that are often implicated in allergic reactions. Dogs are not allergic to a dog food per se; rather they react to one or more of the ingredients in the food. Some of the most common culprits are beef, pork, chicken, milk, whey, eggs, fish, corn, soy, wheat and preservatives. Many animals are now developing allergies to lamb as well. This was once thought to be very hypo-allergenic, but the more it is used, the more sensitivities are springing up. There are many hypoallergenic diets available and they must be fed for up to 10 weeks to see if they will help with the allergic symptoms. Fleas are another common cause of allergies. The severe itching and resultant hair loss is caused by a reaction to the protein in the flea saliva. A single bite can cause a reaction for five to seven days. Good flea control is accomplished by either a pill or a topical that is recommended by your veterinarian. Next month, we will discuss the treatment options available for your pets.

Question: What do I need to know about the dangers of fleas and ticks?

Answer: It is the time of year when all dog and cat owners need to address the issue of parasite control. Unfortunately, many pet owners don’t fully understand the importance of flea and tick control. It is critical that you understand the dangers that your pets (and you) could be facing. Parasites, besides being an annoyance carry many dangerous diseases-some of which are life-threatening. That’s why it is so important that you understand how to protect your pet from these dangers. Fleas: The problem with fleas is that they breed and multiply very quickly. One flea on your dog or cat, in two months time, could increase to almost 3 million. Fleas are blood-sucking parasites and can bite your pet more than 400 times in just one day. If your pet has an allergic reaction to the proteins in flea saliva, he can develop flea allergy dermatitis, causing constant scratching and licking and skin problems such as infections and hair loss. Fleas can also transmit very serious diseases to your pet, including anemia, bacterial diseases, tapeworms and other parasites. Ticks: Tick infestations of dogs and cats are important not only because ticks are nuisance blood sucking parasites but also because they can transmit a variety of diseases. A tick bite can cause localized infection. The most harmful effects of a tick bite include serious diseases like Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain fever, paralysis, encephalitis and anemia. An additional hazard is if your pet brings a tick into your home, there is the risk of transmitting these same diseases to you or your family. Ticks are particularly hard to control and are on the increase throughout the country. The increase in the white tailed deer population due to changes in agricultural practices is a primary reason. An additional issue is the existence of multiple tick species; at least 11 different varieties have been identified. In Kansas, four different species have been found to be commonplace and more are moving in. Prevention is the key to controlling these insect vectors and year around treatment is becoming the norm across the country. Because of the different varieties of ticks with varying life cycles, the threat is constant. There are many products available that will protect your pets from both fleas and ticks. These are becoming increasingly available both over-the- counter and from your veterinarian. Five Quick Tips for Tick Control: 1. Check for ticks daily. 2. Use a preventative on all pets. 3. Ask your veterinarian for screening of possible tick borne illnesses at least yearly. 4. Watch pets closely for changes in behavior or appetite. 5. Talk with your veterinarian about tick or flea borne diseases in your area.

Question: What is Heartworm disease and is my dog really susceptible?

Answer: Canine heartworm disease develops when a dog is bitten by mosquito carrying microscopic heartworm larvae (juvenile worms) of a parasite called Dirofilaria Immitis. As a mosquito feeds, these larvae are deposited on the dog and quickly penetrate the skin to begin their migration into the dog’s bloodstream. Adult heartworms can grow 10 to 12 inches in length and make their home in the right side of the heart and pulmonary (lung) arteries, often causing lung disease and heart failure. It is now known that the adult worms can live up to 7-years. Although easy to prevent, heartworm disease continues to be a major health problems for dogs living in the United States. Since some dogs can be infected for many years before symptoms develop, heartworm disease in dogs may not be obvious. But, as heartworms slowly cause damage to the pulmonary arteries of the lungs, signs of disease may include a mild persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue after moderate activity, decreased appetite and weight loss. Eventually, as blood flow through the diseased lungs becomes more restricted, some dogs can develop heart failure. Numerous blood tests are available for detecting heartworm infections in dogs, and your veterinarian will perform the test most appropriate for your dog. All dogs should be tested especially before starting on a preventative. Heartworm preventatives are effective when given properly and on a timely schedule. The best way to eliminate the risk of heartworm infection in your dog is to institute a year-round prevention program. While the risk of infection in dogs varies from one region of the country to another and even from one community to another, one fact remains...heartworm disease is a threat to unprotected dogs in every state, even some parts of Alaska. Unprotected dogs, foxes, coyotes and wolves act as reservoirs, or sources, for the spread of this serious disease.

Question: What is laser therapy and can it benefit my pets? Please explain.

Answer:Laser therapy uses “cold” laser light at a low intensity to stimulate tissues to heal. Healing occurs by the promotion of circulation-dilating both blood vessels and lymphatics to help the body remove toxins and reduce swelling which will alleviate pain. Laser light desensitizes local nerves so they send fewer pain signals to the brain. Also, healing tissue fibers called collagen align themselves in a more linear, uniform, “normal” direction when exposed to laser light, reducing scarring and improving the tissue strength of newly healed wounds faster. Question: Is owning a pet actually good for my health?

Answer: Did you know chances are, you’ll live longer and feel better if you own a pet. Scientific studies about the human-animal bond reveal that pet owners are more likely to have reduced stress levels, lower cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure and better mental health. They also experience fewer heart attacks than people without pets. Pets require our attention and providing the everyday pet care encourages owners to interact and get outside to exercise. Seniors with pets are less likely to be lonely or bored and interaction with their pet often prolongs their lives. Companion animals also provide psychological benefits. Pets are sympathetic, supportive and non-judgmental listeners. Pets provide us with a distraction from our worries; they encourage social interaction; provide a soothing presence and unconditional love. Children also benefit from animal companionship. They are more likely to have higher self-esteem and confidence if they have childhood pets. Animals are known to stimulate communication skills in children and are an excellent way to teach a child about responsibility. Service animals are becoming a very necessary part of the lives of those with disabilities. They are able to help mobility, sight, and hearing impaired as well as alerting an epileptic owner that a seizure is imminent. Veterinarians recognize the existence of the human-animal bond and its importance to client and community health. Our role is to maximize the potentials of this relationship between people and animals. So enjoy your pets! Some trainers act like drill sergeants; others talk and cajole their dogs. How do I know what is the best method for my dog?

ANSWER: There seems to be a lot of confusion about the right collar to use to train dogs. Some trainers recommend a prong collar, some a choke, other just a flat buckle. Techniques differ too. While dogs are distinctively individual there are some training methods that will work with the majority of dogs. No one collar or one technique will work with every dog. There are also some so called training practices that should never be used. Physical abuse such as kicking, hitting, or hanging your dog are unacceptable and ineffective methods of training. Positive reinforcement such as physical interaction and food reward are typically very effective. It is also important to maintain a leadership or “alpha” role with your dog. Since dogs are pack animals they respect a strong but kind leader. The tools you use on your dog are secondary to the previously mentioned methodology. Personally I do not use or recommend the prong or pinch collar. With nearly 30 years of training experience I have found there are other kinder, more effective methods of controlling your dog. In our classes we mainly use the regular collar, slip leads or a Gentle Leader™. Proper placement of the collar or slip lead is of utmost importance. The collar or lead should be positioned directly behind the ears. Most collars are too loose and lay on the lower neck, close to the dog’s shoulders. This means when your dog is on a leash you are trying to control the dog from his strongest point. The Gentle Leader ™ fits over your dog’s nose and behind the ears much like a halter on a horse. With the leader or a properly place collar you have control of the head. Control the head and you control the dog. Once you have some control of your dog you can help her focus on you with your voice and treats. You do not need to yell or bark commands (no pun intended). A dog has better hearing than a person so he hears you just fine. Constantly repeating yourself, sit, sit, SIT, SIT, is unnecessary. If your dog doesn’t know what a word means it does no good to say it again louder. Asking pretty please or begging your dog also has no meaning for them. In fact a whiney voice is interpreted as submissive behavior and confuses your dog on how he should react. You increase your dog’s vocabulary one word at a time. It is most efficient to give a one word command such as heel, sit, down, and then direct your dog into the position you want. Reward her for doing the right thing them help her repeat the performance. Remember dogs learn best when they understand the benefit to them for doing your bidding. No single method will work with every dog. You have to see what training tools and rewards work best for you and your dog. A dog and their human should work as a team with mutual respect and trust. Patience, a sense of humor and perseverance are key ingredients to raising a well balanced, well trained dog.

We have never had to board our dogs and they are very spoiled. What should I look for in a reputable kennel? How can I assure that my dogs will have a positive experience while being boarded?

To answer these questions I went to the expert, Stacy Miles, owner of Wag’en Tail Ranch. She says that a good boarding facility should meet many requirements. Due to the nature of the business, boarding kennels need to have extended and convenient hours. While no one expects a business to be open 24/7, kennels must be sensitive to owners’ travel schedules. First time clients should be allowed to tour the area where their dog will be kenneled. The kennels themselves should be large, clean, well lit, and climate controlled. Ideally the dog has one area to sleep and can go outside to exercise and relieve themselves. The kennels should be divided in a way that offers each dog some privacy to minimize fence fighting and excessive barking. Stacy recognizes the importance of making the kennel as familiar as possible. A radio or television playing is soothing to the dogs. Allowing the pet to have their own bed or blanket, and some toys helps reduce the stress of being away from their family. The owners should bring the dog’s food so that a change in diet does not upset the dog’s digestive tract. The kennel staff should be able to feed the dog on a schedule it is accustomed too as well as give medication if needed. As in any business, a friendly and knowledgeable staff is essential. The people that work at the kennel should be more than dog lovers. They should be trained in handling dogs with all different personalities. Well trained staff can encourage confidence in the timid dog, calm a nervous dog and even diffuse a somewhat aggressive dog. Dogs with major aggression should not be allowed to stay at a boarding facility as they endanger staff, and upset the other dogs. Attentive personnel can tell if your dog is not feeling well or is injured in some way. Current vaccinations such as Rabies, DHPPV and Bordetella will be required for the protection of your dog from communicable diseases. A truly up to date facility will offer a variety of services for your pet. One of the fav orites is a play park where several dogs get to interact with each other in supervised play. Other perks could include obedience training while you’re away, and a groomer to get your pup all dolled up before going home. Innovative facilities are constantly looking to update and improve. Finding the right boarding facility for your dog takes a little research on your part. Plan ahead. Give yourself time to call and visit several facilities in your area. Speak with the staff; find out what services are available for your dog. Remember that the good kennels are often booked far in advance of spring break and major holidays. Make your reservations as early as possible to insure your dog can be accommodated. The boarding experience for your dog should be a fun holiday. His stay should be a doggy vacation, not just a caged stay while the owner’s away.

I have watched agility at dog shows and on television and it looks like a lot of fun, but is there any real benefit to doing this with my dog?

ANSWER: I believe you have answered your own question with the most important reason to do an activity with your dog: It’s FUN!! Let’s break it down and look at the aspects that make agility so rewarding for your dog and for you. Agility is the dog equivalent of the military obstacle course for humans. To participate, your dog must learn the name for each obstacle and go there when directed. They learn to go over jumps, through tunnels and shoots, climb an A-frame, walk the dog walk, dart in and out of the weave poles, sit on a table, and go over a teeter. You are your dog’s team leader so you must run with him, telling him which obstacle to take next and keeping him on course. You are training your dog to go from couch potato to conditioned athlete. Obviously the exercise will do you good as well. Remember the adage: “If your dog is to fat you need more exercise.” Healthy dogs need a lot of exercise. Agility stimulates your dog physically and mentally. Dogs that get adequate exercise are less likely to have unwanted behaviors at home. By preventing boredom and frustration you head off destructive or aggressive behaviors that surface in dogs with little or no way to release their energy. Agility is not only physically challenging but stimulates the mind as well. When first introduced to the agility obstacles the dog must figure out how to do things he has never done before. She must also increase her vocabulary by learning many new commands. Then, as she progresses to sequencing several obstacles in a row, your dog must process where to go when told and how to navigate while running as fast as she can. Of course you must run along, telling your dog what course to take. This means you have memorized the course well enough to remember to tell your dog which way to go. An agility course is never the same twice. You are not training a circus dog to repeat a singular performance over and over. You may have taught your dog to walk politely on a leash and some basic commands such as sit or down. Now you are asking him to take off at full speed, go exactly where you tell him, stop on the table, then take off again with 100% accuracy. This kind of team work takes time, patience and commitment. My dog wants to charge at other dogs. When we go for a walk he is alright unless he sees another dog coming toward us or in a fence then he nearly pulls me off my feet. I'm afraid that one day he'll get into a fight and either get hurt or hurt a dog. How can I stop this behavior?

ANSWER: Several factors come into play with dominant or aggressive behavior in dogs. These behaviors often can be traced to poor breeding practices and the lack of early socialization. Temperament is a combination of genetics and environment. If puppies' parents tended to be aggressive, those genetics will be passed on to the offspring and consequently the pups may also have aggressive tendencies. Early socialization and positive training can overcome many genetic predispositions. Obviously dogs that learn in infancy how to get along with pack members are easier to train than dogs that have poor social skills. The first thing that must be determined is if your dog has merely a dominant personality or if he is truly aggressive. Dominant dogs are the playground bullies. They greet other dogs head on with ears and tail erect. If the other dog acts submissively the situation is diffused and the dogs will ignore each other or even initiate play. If the oncoming dog is also dominant then a fight may ensue. Aggressive dogs are the sociopaths of the canine world. They are looking for a fight and will attack another dog regardless of how that dog responds. These dogs are a real danger and should be kept as pets only with rigid confinement or intense retraining by a professional. A behavioral consultation would be needed to actually determine in which personality type your dog fits. However since you indicate you have been able to separate your dog from the one he is charging he probably falls into the dominant dog category. The fist step in retraining your dog to act appropriately is a firm foundation in basic commands such as sit, heel, and down. You should have a relationship of trust with your dog so he knows he will be instantly rewarded for obeying you and as leader of his pack you will protect him from any threat. Many dogs lunge because they believe they must dominate the other dog or they will be attacked. This is called fight or flight. A dog on a leash or chained outside knows he cannot run away and sees fighting as his only option. Your dog does not trust you to protect him. When he learns to obey you and look to you to reward him for ignoring approaching dogs, much of the lunging should stop. In addition to learning his commands he needs to be taught how to appropriately approach another dog. Canine manners are essential since our dogs are allowed to go many places with us. Dogs that don't know each other should never be introduced face to face and eye to eye. In canine society these actions are considered rude and aggressive. Your dog should be allowed to approach other dog nose to tail. Identifying the other dogs scent is how they learn to identify each other. After a generous amount of rear end sniffing the dogs will start to circle and size each other up. Body posture will dictate the next step in their relationship. If any growling or mounting starts you should calmly but firmly distract your dog with a leash correction and a command to heel. You then just walk away. This conveys to your dog that he can interact with another dog as long as he is polite but must move on if he can't behave. If you are out walking there may be times you must simply go a different direction if your dog cannot stay focused on you. The key element is having a good trusting relationship with your dog. He should know without a doubt that his good behavior will be instantly rewarded and inappropriate behavior will be redirected and deterred.

I work in an assisted living facility that has therapy dogs’ visit. The residents love it when the dogs come. I have a dog with a great personality that I would like to bring to work. How can I get him eligible to be a Therapy Dog?

ANSWER: Therapy Dogs and their owners always work as volunteers; however many facilities will allow you to bring your certified dog to work with you as long as the company has a liability policy that covers your dog and you. When you go out as a representative of Therapy Dogs International or another organization such as Therapy Dogs Inc., or Delta, your liability insurance is covered by the parent organization. Therapy Dogs are welcome in many venues. Assisted Living, Alzheimer’s facilities, cancer treatment units, rehabilitation wards, homes for mentally and physically disabled, even places such as the Children’s Home, and Rainbows United. For your dog to be certified with Therapy Dogs International they must pass a 14 step test and have the confidence to meet lots of people. A full list of the steps can be found at www.tdi-dog.org. I refer to this organization because it is the most recognized and I own 3 certified dogs and am an evaluator with them. Most of the test is good basic obedience. Sit, stay, heel, come, down are commands your dog needs to know. They must be able to perform these commands around other dogs and while strangers approach them in a wheelchair or with a walker. The dog must have a stable enough temperament to not become frightened or aggressive if people reach out or even hug him. Loud noises and strange machinery should not overly stimulate your dog. They must learn to not pick up food or objects from the floor or within their reach, even if they smell wonderful. Therapy Dogs bring a wonderful dimension to the lives of the elderly, ill, or displaced youth. Cathy, a handler with TDI, takes her Dachsunds to a cancer treatment facility. They entertain with tricks but more importantly they sit on a patient’s lap while treatment is in progress. Many times Cathy has been told how the pain and stress of the treatment melts away while petting a soft warm dog. Dogs evoke memories in the nursing home residents. We hear wonderful stories of dogs they owned throughout their lives. Post Surgical patients that are reluctant to exercise will walk the dog or throw a ball to be retrieved. Head trauma victims will respond to the tactile stimulation of a dog lying beside them on the bed. One experience I will never forget is when a stroke victim spoke to my dog after 6 months of silence. Therapy Dogs are being used in the school reading programs, and in the classrooms. The volunteer handlers take the dogs for special programs or at certain times during the day for interaction with the students. Dogs that are one year or older can be tested to be Therapy Dogs. The 14 steps to the obedience part of the test are not particularly difficult with regular training. However, not every obedient dog makes a good therapy dog. The dog must have the friendly outgoing temperament to face new people and new situations without showing signs of undo stress. If you have a dog that you feel could meet these requirements and you have the willingness to volunteer as a handler then perhaps owning a Therapy Dog is the community service for you.

My dog is so bad and destructive! He digs holes in the yard and chews up everything. He has tons of toys but still chose to chew the garden hose into a dozen pieces. What can we do?

ANSWER: Digging and chewing are common complaints of dog owners especially if the dog is less than 1 year old. Your dog is not being BAD by chewing and digging. He is simply doing what dogs do to entertain themselves. These are normal behaviors for dogs. If a dog smells something wonderful in the ground he will dig to find the source. Remember, dogs have millions more scent receptors than humans. If a dog is hot it will dig to cooler soil. If he is cold he will dig to protect himself from the elements. Digging is self rewarding and fun. If your dog is in a yard with privacy fencing he may dig to get out so he can see the things that he can only smell and hear inside the fence. If you have privacy fencing, you are putting your dog in an environment of sensory deprivation. You should cut 2 or 3 areas in the boards and cover with chain link so your dog can see out of his box. Chewing is also very entertaining. Puppies under 6 months of age are teething. They instinctively chew to speed the process of getting the deciduous (baby) teeth out and the adult teeth in. It feels good on their gums to chew hard objects. Dogs interact with their environment for three reasons. 1. It feels good, 2. It tastes good, 3. It smells good. Bored dogs are destructive dogs. They cannot watch TV or read a book. They cannot take themselves for a walk. They will find ways to entertain themselves as much as possible within the limits of their yard or home. That means anything in the yard belongs to them. They cannot distinguish their toys from the garden hose. Your favorite feather pillow is much more fun to tear up than the boring rubber bone. So, what is the solution? Just because we have established that these behaviors are normal does not make them acceptable. One solution to help with both digging and chewing is to make your dog a Treasure Island. This will be her area to dig, hunt, and chew to her heart’s desire. Find an area of your yard or build a "sand box". Fill the area with sand or loose dirt. Bury a multitude of treasures for your dog to find. The objects should include treats such as milk bones or other snacks. Bury her toys, new and old. Best of all bury some long lasting edible objects such as knuckle bones, bull sticks, or compressed rawhides. Renew the objects daily to keep your dog interested. Another important aspect to curbing unwanted behavior in your dog is to spend more time with them. Play games such as fetch to run off energy. Go for walks; join an obedience or agility class. The exercise will be good for both of you. Take your dog to a doggy day care on occasion. It is important to stimulate your dog mentally and physically. Teach him tricks; give him a job to do. The more things your dog learns to do that are acceptable to you the less time he will have to do the things that are unacceptable. Dogs are happiest when they are spending time with their pack. We are important pack members to our dog and it is up to us to provide them with an exciting and stimulating environment. This can be very fun and rewarding for the whole family, especially the furry, four footed member.

ANSWER: First of all let me commend you for asking for a recommendation before acquiring the first puppy you see. There are many aspects to consider before you bring home your new four legged, fur covered family member. First and foremost, the puppy will belong to the adults in the home, not the children. It will fall on you to feed, housebreak, take to the veterinarian, and train the puppy. While I have no doubt the kids will be delighted with their new playmate, children that age are not capable of the long term commitment needed to properly care for another life. This is a good time however to teach them some responsibility in helping care for the puppy. Certainly the children should be involved in the feeding and training of pets. When it comes to actually deciding on a new puppy or dog you need to examine your life style. Ask yourself what kind of dog you can live with for the next 12 to 15 years. Do your have the time and patience to housebreak a puppy? Do you mind cleaning up accidents or replacing chewed up toys (or other items)? Does dog hair or muddy paws make your frantic? Can you afford vaccinations, Heartworm Preventative, obedience classes, food and other assorted miscellaneous expenses? Do you understand that dogs instinctively need to be with other pack members? Leaving puppies alone for long periods of time causes boredom and frustration which lead to destructive behavior. When you are ready to start the selection process of choosing a breed or type of dog it is important to assess the activity level of your family. If you are active and athletic, and enjoy working and playing outside, then some of the herding breeds or high energy Terriers may be right for you. If your family is more of the video games and movie type then you should consider getting an older dog that is content to snooze beside you on the couch. Dogs add a new and wonderful dimension of family life. A puppy playing with a laughing child is like sunshine on a rainy day. Petting and grooming your dog can be relaxing and stress reducing. Taking the kids and the dog for a walk can open avenues of conversation as well as increase your exercise routine. Consider carefully your decision to acquire a puppy or a dog. Research breeds; be open to adopting from the Animal Shelter, Humane Society or Rescue Organizations. Steer clear of stores that wholesale puppies for outrageous prices. ANSWER: There many simple and humane ways to keep pets and of your flowerbeds or gardens. Politely talk to your neighbors. They may not be aware their pet is roaming and may appreciate letting them know.    Try fencing. An 18-inch wire fence will keep most pets, rabbits, and skunks out. Bury the fence about 8 inches into the ground and burying chicken wire under all the beds to deter digging. If you can't afford fencing, try a raised flowerbed.    For ornamental plantings where you won't need to dig the soil again, you can cover the ground with a mulch or wood chips or gravel.         For vegetable beds, put down hardware cloth on your beds and then plant through it, using a thick straw mulch might keep them away from the soil surface.    Fill planters and soil with rocks to deter trespassing felines. Place spin wheels or other mobile ornaments in the yard. These inexpensive yard art pieces that spin when the wind blows may seem to scare away animals away. If cats are scampering into your garden in pursuit of flying prey, then maybe you have to pitch in and help the birds make a safer escape. Place bird feeders out of harm's way by mounting them on poles with a squirrel baffle or hang them from branches that stretch well out from the trunk of a tree. Use feeders that have catch trays or small seed openings to limit the amount of seed that falls to the ground.   There are pet repellent sprays and powders you can get over the internet and at gardening shops however, their results are often have mixed effectiveness. Please remember to always be humane. BB guns, poisons and other aggressive techniques can cause serious injury or death to the animal and may result in a lawsuit for you.

ANSWER: When you adopt a pet from the Kansas Humane Society, you will receive the animal's health records in the form of a 'Pet Passport.' Share this record with your veterinarian. Inside the passport, your vet will find a clear history of the vaccinations your new pet has received while at the Kansas Humane Society. Depending on your new pet's age and whether he is a dog or a cat, he may have received one or more of the following vaccinations: bordatella, DA2PP, or FVRCP. If your pet was given up by his owner, we can check his records and see who his previous veterinarian was. After adoption, you can contact that vet and find out what vaccinations he had. If he never saw a veterinarian or was stray and his medical history is a mystery, he'll definitely need a rabies vaccination and may need others depending on his age. If he's had a vaccination already, giving a second vaccination before two weeks can confuse the immune system. Booster vaccinations will protect him against a very sick future. Small birds such as finches and canaries have a very high metabolism and burn lots of calories naturally. Letting them loose in your house can be very unsafe. They can fly under or behind heavy furniture and get lost in plants or curtains. A spacious cage which allows some room for flight is the best with these little guys.      The psittacine or hookbill family, which includes: cockatiels, conures, cockatoos and macaws, is a different story. Many of these birds will learn to stay on top of their cage, on a playstand, or T-Stand away from the cage. Even if they are not very tame they can learn to respond when you are asking them to return to their cage. More sedentary large birds should be encouraged to flap their wings when outside the cage, or play with toys in or out of the cage for exercise. Some birds are more apt to become obese than others. The Amazon species is the "couch potato" of the bird world.      I always recommend the bird's wings be properly trimmed. Someone knowledgeable should trim their wings, or teach you the correct method. If you are concerned about letting your birds out, or do not want to trim their wings, plan on a cage that is large enough to provide adequate space for your bird's movement and toys.

Your dog may be in pain and is expressing her discomfort through chewing. If you notice any unusual growths, discolorations, lesions, etc., anywhere on your dog, take her to your veterinarian for a thorough examination. A dog younger than a year old should be checked for any missing or loose teeth. She may be "teething", losing childhood teeth as her adult teeth come in. And, just like a human child whose is teething, chewing on items relieves her pain. Give her plenty of rawhides or durable rubber toys to chew on. Some dogs find relief by chewing on ice cubes. At around a year old, most dogs have a full set of adult teeth and the chewing should slow down. If your dog has all her adult teeth and no physical problems, her chewing may signify a behavior issue-either her's or your's. For some dogs, particularly sporting and herding breeds that crave "jobs", chewing is a way to relieve boredom and excess energy. Check the food you're feeding her. If she's eating high energy performance dog food, snack bones and other treats all the time but isn't getting enough exercise to use it up, she'll find inappropriate ways to burn off her energy. Talk with your vet about which dog food is appropriate for your pet's lifestyle. You have to have the right expectations of your dog. At one year old, your Lab/Golden mix still a pup and hasn't learned what and what isn't appropriate to chew on. It will take time for her to learn and mature. Is she chewing when you're home? Show her what's okay for her to chew on by playing with her and the appropriate toys. Spritz her with a water gun when she chews on the wrong thing. Spray Bitter Apple® or other non-toxic products on the items she tends to gravitate towards. It will make the items taste bad and discourage chewing. Does she have free run of the home when you're away? Try crating her while you're gone and giving her a chew to gnaw on. Other dogs' chewing behavior may be an indication that they are lonely. Remember that dogs are pack animals and your dog looks to you as its leader. If you're gone 8 - 10 hours a day and then collapse in front of the tv when you get home, giving your dog a pat on its head, your dog may end up feeling alone, unwanted and not part of the pack. And, if the only way to get active interaction with you (as the pack leader) is to chew on your shoes or the side of the house, she'll do it every time because, for most companion dogs, any attention is better than no attention.The solution? Spend time with your canine. Go to obedience school or other training classes. Pay more attention to her. Take her on long walks every day. Play with her in the morning before you head to the office. Give her chew toys or kongs to keep her occupied while you're gone. Enroll her in a dog day care or set a play date with a friend and his dog. Spend part of your weekend doing dog stuff like walking, running, swimming, rolling around with her in the yard, or playing fetch. Take her with you while you water the plants, go through a fast food drive through, or just sit on the porch in the evening. Be patient, work with her, and you'll be thrilled as she grows into a mature "chew-free" adult. They are now ages 4 and 6 years and we feel the time is right. What is the best dog for our situation… old or young… big or small? If we go for an old dog from the shelter, how do we know we're not getting someone else's problems?

Answer:  Many people have a "warm fuzzy" image of a puppy or kitten and a child growing up together while others like the idea of getting an adult dog or cat who'll require less time and attention after adjusting to the new family's household routines. Owning a pet may be one of the biggest responsibilities and one of the greatest joys you and your family may ever have. Living with pets increases a child's self-esteem, teaches responsibility and helps build feelings of empathy and respect. But a lack of preparation, or choosing a pet impulsively or unwisely, may result in an unhappy situation for both you and your new pet. Every pet has a history, no matter how young or how old or where you get him. He may come with specific details about his background or have a history that remains mysterious. No matter the history, a pet of any age can bond with the people who love and care for him, giving as much to the relationship as he receives in return. Whatever you adopt, remember it's your responsibility, to your pet and to your child, to monitor their interactions. You can help to strengthen the relationship between your pet and child by showing your respect for your pet's needs and feelings. Teach by example that your pet is an important family member, not a "plaything" to be neglected and tossed away when no longer new and exciting.You have two young children who already require your care and time. Will you have enough time to care for a rambunctious puppy or constantly curious kitten as well? Because they're babies, puppies and kittens have tiny, fragile bodies that need to be handled with care. A puppy or kitten may become frightened, or even injured, by a well-meaning, curious child who wants to constantly pick him up, hug him or explore his body by pulling on his tail or ears. Puppies also tend to jump up on small children during an exciting playtime and may accidentally knock them down. All interactions between your child and puppy or kitten will need to be closely supervised in order to minimize the chances of either being injured. Although puppies and kittens are great fun, and it's exciting and rewarding to see them grow, they need significant amounts of attention, training and supervision to become well behaved adults. Consider how much time you have to devote to your new animal. Puppies and kittens need more physical and emotional involvement than you can reasonably give if you are away from home more than six hours a day. Most adult pets can easily adjust to a longer schedule; however, they also need time to learn what is expected of them. Some never grow accustomed to being left alone for long periods of time. If all of your family members are away from home more than eight hours most days, a dog may not be the appropriate choice for your household, and you might want to consider adopting an adult cat (or two) instead. The cats will keep each other company and the extra work for you is minimal. Many adult dogs, purebreds and mixes, are surrendered to shelters because their owners were simply unprepared for their ‘easy to pick up pup’ becoming a large, curious adult. If you're looking for a dog with certain personality traits and a mature disposition, consider adopting dog 18 months old or older. All of the adult dogs at the Kansas Humane Society have individual personality profiles listed on their kennels to give you a better idea of just who you are taking home-a Couch Potato, a Goofball or a Life of the Party. Dogs at this age learn quickly, have better control over their bodies and their physical functions, and have more predictable natures. While it takes time to teach any dog basic manners - walking on a leash, not to jump on people and not to play too roughly - an adult pet is usually past the stage of becoming overly excited, and you can better gauge how hardy and tolerant he'll be toward childish enthusiasm. You can benefit from someone else's poor planning if you adopt an adult or teenage dog, but only if you're willing to do what they did not - teach him the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. Enrolling in basic obedience training classes and using what you learn everyday will help your dog become a well-mannered member of the family. Finally, take your time. Getting an idea about what you and your family need will help you to find the "one". Research breeds. Ask friends and neighbors about their animals. Talk to the shelter's staff. They are intimately familiar with the adoptable animals and can give you insights into behaviors, personalities, and more. With a little patience and planning, you'll find the perfect pet for a lifetime.

Question:  Does your home or apartment have to be a certain size to keep a large bird like a parrot or a macaw?

Answer: Part of the answer to this question depends on how much furniture you want to have in the room where your bird’s cage will be. How large  can the cage be and still fit your  room comfortably? The basic rule of thumb is: your bird should be able to stretch its wings any direction from the center of the cage and not touch the sides.  For example a 15" X 15" cage is adequate for a finch, canary, budgie, love bird, or cockatiel. A 19" X 19" cage will be suitable for a senegal, small conure, or grass parakeet. 24" X 24" cages can house a larger conure, amazon, african grey, and smaller cockatoos and mini macaws. The minimum space for the larger cockatoos and macaws would be a 24" X 36" cage. The green winged macaw and hyacinth macaw would need even more space. One other consideration is to choose a bird with not only your family in mind, but which will also be neighbor friendly. All healthy birds make noise. The bigger the bird the louder the noise! Apartments are not always the best homes for a large cockatoo, or macaw. Most birds naturally scream at first light in the morning and at dusk in the evening. Spoiled demanding birds can be loud much more often. Before you acquier a bird, talk with someone  knowledgeable with the species behavior. They can help you choose the bird and cage that are right for you, your family and your living arrangements.

Only so many responsible, caring homes exist. Finding a home for one of your pet's offspring means you've only eliminated potential homes for needy shelter dogs and cats.Let's imagine there are 15 puppies at the Kansas Humane Society who need homes (not an unusual occurrence). Ten families in the Wichita area are willing to provide a good home for the puppies. If each family takes a puppy, there are still 5 "leftover" puppies at the shelter who have no where to go. Then imagine you let your dog have a litter of 5 puppies. There are now 20 puppies that need adoptive families. Even if you manage to find homes for all of your 5 puppies, there are still 10 homeless puppies left where, before your animal bred, there were only 5. In addition, in less than one year's time, each of your pet's puppies may have his or her own litter, adding even more animals to the population. The staff at the Kansas Humane Society cares very deeply about the thousands of healthy, beautiful, affectionate cats, dogs, kittens and puppies we receive every year and we want to find homes for every single one. However, the fact is that the volume of pets entering our shelter greatly outnumbers the numbers of families looking to adopt. Limiting the number of animals being born until they equal the number of people who want and can care for them by spaying and neutering (simple surgical procedures that remove reproductive organs) is the best way to prevent this overpopulation problem. The removal of ovaries and uterus from a female pet is called an ovariohysterectomy or, as is more commonly known, spaying. Spaying removes or lowers the physical dangers of uterine infection, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer and, if spayed before reaching puberty, mammary cancer. Spayed females also tend to be more content and less apt to roam. Orchiectomy or neutering is the removal of testes from a male animal. This removal eliminates the possibility of testicular cancer and greatly reduces the risk of prostatic disease. After the procedure, males are less aggressive, have a reduced compulsion to wander and incidents of territorial marking decrease. A common misconception is that altering a pet will make it gain weight and body size. Altered animals simply require fewer calories per day to maintain their ideal weight. Less scoops of food means less cost to the owner. Studies also show that animals altered between 2 - 5 months of age grow taller and have a larger body size. By altering your animal, you end up with a stronger, healthier pet. Every year, over 11,000 animals are brought to the Kansas Humane Society needing shelter, medical care and a new home. We do our part at the Society by spaying or neutering all our adoptable animals but, until breeding is limited to the point where there are more than enough good homes available for all the puppies and kittens being born, you can't find a good home for every one. The problems of pet overpopulation are created and perpetuated one litter at a time. As a pet owner, it is your choice to add to the pet overpopulation problem or help end it.

Question: I’ve heard mixed opinions on the safety of feeding pets from the table. Are bones healthy for dogs and what would you recommend pet owners to watch for when feeding pets “table food?”

Answer: Feeding pets from the table is not recommended by most veterinarians. Good quality dry food is far superior as a diet for most pets. It teaches dogs bad habits to feed them while you are eating and spoils them so they don’t want to eat their proper food. If you insist on feeding “table food” then give the dog or cat a variety of food which includes vegetables, fruits and a small amount of meat. Don’t feed fatty leftovers to your pet as pancreatitis is common problem. There is a long list of foods that if fed can result in severe consequences for your pet. This list includes avocadoes, onions in all forms, grapes and raisins, nuts, raw fish, yeast dough, salty foods, raw potatoes, chocolate, candy or gum with xylitol and caffeine or other medicines. Chewing bones can provide health benefits for your dog. They keep the teeth clean and keep the dog occupied. However there are a number of serious hazards you should avoid, these include avoiding bones that will splinter such as cooked poultry, rib, pork chop and steak bones. You should select bones which are softer than your dog’s teeth such as knuckle bones. Hard bones can fracture teeth or become lodged in the intestine. Trim bones closely of all fat as it can cause intestinal upsets. A good suggestion for keeping a pet busy is to only allow them to chew on a bone under supervision for 20-30 minutes at a time. Store the bone in the freezer in between chewing sessions. Fortunately, there are many available commercial chew treats and artificial bones that are much safer for your pet and along with a balanced diet will ensure a long healthy life.
